One of my first IT mentors was a breh on this site. I am grateful for what this site was especially in the mid 2010's. I can't even lie, these nikkas 100%.

The illest shyt is
There are ways to get advanced certs without actually knowing the material and just paying for the testing and a big ass fee
then taking a high paying IT position that doesn't even utilize the skills from that cert
So u don't get exposed
Then u build up ya resume and ya 1st gig is already some mid level shyt
An associate of mine (cac)
Married a Bih in Thailand
And he opened up an IT School there
U paying like 7k tho![]()
IT is really one of the most difficult fields to break into. You really gotta be crafty. My homie from Memphis who used to be run shyt there put me on the game how shyt really is in this industry. It's all about skills. Blacks can't play the same IT game as cacs do but we can get just as far in a shorter amount of time as well. You just gotta be crafty.
You don't have to go to school for this to learn it? Cyber-security I mean. Also what if you have a felony?
I love stories like this. IT is one of the few industries where black folks can really flourish provided you put in the work.
Never imagined making 200k at 30
I can attest to this. I now make $120K a year in the field. I self studied for close to two years. I was making 70k and met a Nigerian breh making close to $300k a year in I.T. and knew I had to grind.
The six cert thread has EVERY THING you need. Everything. In two years or so, I want to hit $150k to $200k.
Never got the sec+ but got the Network + and CCNA R/S (i let that expire since i am not doing much R/S anymore), but now i am focused on wireless right now given my certs in my sig. I need to take this free time to get my CWAP, and study for the ACDX and/or ACMX.Yup
Network + ,then sec +, then CCNA
All can be done in 15months
If you are open to moving you can get bread out here, eapecialy goct said if you get the clearance.
Contracting is switxhingg up now, so get that sec+ first because they are phasing out the 6 month wavers for contrcators. Get all your certa applh for any position you can that will get you a clearance. Its an incredible investment.
This doesn't get mentioned much, but it really is. You can rack up a gang of certs and still be stuck in help desk.IT is really one of the most difficult fields to break into.
To add: If you have an excellent community college around you, I would truly advise you to take advantage of it, get in all of the honors societies, and get all of that free money for four-year college as well as work while you earning your degree. For those who want an IT degree. I'd recommend Western Governors University https://www.wgu.edu/online-it-degrees/bachelors-programs.html#close.

I had a A+, Network+, Security+, Project+, and a CCNA (but no degree at the time) and could not get a job in networking/security. I wasn't able to get anything beyond help desk roles until I got my degree and switched to development.
I guess I'ma have to bite the bullet and get in tech.
