Travis Nevelle Page, 31, of Winston-Salem, died at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center after officers responded to a firearm discharge call around 7:30 p.m. at 4404 Old Rural Hall Road, police said. Page became unresponsive after being placed in handcuffs, police said.
An autopsy was completed Thursday at Baptist. SBI officials, who have taken over the investigation, said the final report may not be released for 2-3 months.
Officers at the scene tried to detain Page after he matched the suspect description given by the person who reported the incident, police said. A foot pursuit and brief struggle ensued, during which one of the officers pepper-sprayed Page, police said.
Officers found a (ALLEGED) gun on Page before he was taken to the hospital, police said. A police news release also said a controlled substance was seized at the time of Page's arrest.
