today the term black/african is used to describe someone with dark skin, kinky hair, broad nose, thick lips etc.
An African American just means an American with dark skin, kinky hair, broad nose, thick lips etc. You don't even have to have all of those features, and you will still be recognized as having significant African (or black) ancestry/blood.
