I was in BigBrotherBig Sisters. My kid had ADHD and literally lived in the hood. One day he got arrested for trespassing in what I think was a setup. He and his badass friends were walking through an empty house and apparently 5 cop cars rolled up and came through like SWAT.

Dude got put on house arrest. Went to go visit him and talked things over. Then he decides to take his ankle bracelet off a few days later and got put in juvie. After he got out, his mom sent him to live with his dad in NC.

I couldn't take much more brehs. I told BB/BS I was taking a break. He was a smart kid too. :to:

I was sad for a couple of days because I thought I had failed him. His mom clearly couldn't handle the kid.

At 13, he didn't need to be another statistic brehs. I told him that repeatedly. Hopefully his dad could help him more than I did.

The single mothers can't handle these boys and its hard to provide any sort of real mentoring without being in their lives everyday.
They don't have a male influence to put their finger in the kid's chest when he starts cutting up. It's a sad state of affairs.

This is the worst part about the whole mentoring process. You really have to effect the parent too along with the child if they are single parents. I've been my mentee's mentor for about 2 years now, and it's a uphill battle, but it's worth it.

I spend a good amount of time checking and regulating on his mom because sometimes people just don't know any better. They are so use to the way they do things that you really have to sit down and explain things to them while also letting them know you have nothing but their best interest at hand.

My mentee was a bad ass. Considered "ADHD", which I hate. Because little black boys and girls are some of the most creative people on the planet, and for the most part, the traditional education system has no idea how to foster those ideas and turn them into something. Anyway, he reminded me of myself when I was younger. Trouble maker but also very friendly and funny. He just needed some guidance and someone to help him focus his energies. I love him like he's my own at this point.

I'mma be :to: when I graduate and I have to go away. Imma try my best to talk to him 2-3 times a week though still and visit when I can. :ohlawd:

I know he will be alright though. One of my mentors had twin mentees. 2 at the same damn time and he was just a student like me. They were bad as fukk at 10 years old. Man, he turned them kids around like no one would believe. Got them into a football program. They still come to campus all the time and everyone knows who they are and everyone looks out for them. Their mom had never been to college, now the only thing they talk about is how they can't wait to get there. It's really beautiful what those kids have found because someone decided to take a chance on them.

Not saying we have to ensure EVERY. SINGLE. KID is mentored to, but the accommodations should be there...

If you can only reach ONE child, that's doing your part. Each one teach one, that should be the motto not some fukking YOLO...Media plays a HUGE part in this too. Got kids thinking that money comes fast and there's PLENTY of it, when reality is only a FEW "youtubers" make it big...even less in entertainment and athletics. We have to steer our children (yes those in your community count) to education. Something they can NEVER take away from you.

Stop letting these IGNORANT fools that rap lead their life. I laughed when BET took "Nightly News" and "Teen Summit" off the air, basically saying y'all aren't nothing but show monkeys. Take your videos (and uncut videos) and reality shows (College Hill, Hell Date) and like it, oh and tune in to our PARENT company a few stations over (MTV, Vh1)

We should be responsible for our community. Whatever happened to "it takes a village to raise a child?" Everybody ducking responsibility b/c "it's not my child" but funny thing is when you have a child, you're gonna need help (from the community) whether you admit it or not...It may not be directly, but you may indirectly need or want the community to help you and your seed(s)...but if you not putting back or giving back there won't be much left. What happened to building up the community just for the sake of seeing your community and nation-wide community prosper? Jewish people do this, and I respect and appreciate them for it...they look out for their own...that's what WE need to do

Black people are never going to have that sense of collectivism though. I think being united by religion for millenia has proven to be stronger than unity by skin color. There are so many factors that go into Jewish communities not leaving their own behind for the most part.

To me that's understandable. But yeah, it would be nice to have that type of solidarity.
