Tragedy struck Ohio State’s campus early Wednesday morning as an unidentified student has passed away after going into cardiac arrest during the school’s traditional “Mirror Lake jump” the night prior, per a report by 247Sports. He was immediately rushed to the hospital and was later pronounced deceased.
The student has not yet been identified.
“University officials are asking for help in identifying the man’s identity,” wrote 247Sports’ Alex Glietman. “He is described as an African-American with medium build and tattoos on his upper left chest and right arm. Anyone who may know who this man may be is encouraged to call OSU police at 614-292-2121.”
The Mirror Lake Jump has been an Ohio State student tradition since 1969. Several thousand students jump into the lake around midnight on the Tuesday night prior (used to be Thursday) to the annual football rivalry game between the Buckeyes and the Michigan Wolverines.
According to Ohio State student affairs, the Mirror Lake Jump is not a university sponsored event, and people are encouraged not to participate.
“The Mirror Lake Jump is not a university-sponsored event, and it is definitely a high-risk activity. My best advice is that you not participate. I recognize, however, that some of you are not going to take that advice, so if you are planning to jump in the lake Tuesday night, please read this. To summarize: no diving or pushing, beware of hypothermia, travel in a group and look out for each other, know that alcohol intake greatly increases risks of injury.”
Per the report, the incident may end the tradition, but university officials have stated: “We’re very early for that. It’s just unknown at this point.”
