I know why PBT and Jason Black hated on BP, and I kind of agree with them, but I feel that they should've stepped back and let the black community revel in this small - if ultimately hollow - victory that they feel the movie is.

That's how I feel about it. I've posted numerous negative thoughts about this film prior to release, but decided to fall back after seeing so many Black folks loving it. When older Black folks are feeling it, Black children, Black teenagers, Black women, etc., can't be mad at that. Can't take the nose in the air approach either like I'm above it all or something. My mom went and saw it on Saturday and loved it. This turned into a cultural event for Black folks. Glad to see em all having fun and enjoying themselves. The way I figure, why can't Black folks enjoy a popcorn movie too?

My issue is with the black folks treating this film as some milestone in black history, an achievement of monumental proportions that we'll wistfully reminisce on when poring over family photographs with our grandchildren. It's a blockbuster comic book movie produced and distributed by Disney, starring a black cast that will see a meaningless fraction of the wealth this film generates for its white financiers. At the end of the day, once the film has hit Cable and Netflix, black people will still reside in AmeriKKKa and still be subject to the system of apartheid we presently live under.
