Could it be the fact that those same men built the societies and institutions that allowed not only them but women as well to enjoy greater levels of prosperity and security. Toiled and died again and again to protect it from constant incursion. Could the continued increase in life expectancy (particularly as it pertains to women) be attributed to these same creatures; men. Not so much a Western anomaly but something that is observed in all humanity.

Yes, I think that's precisely what it is. In Western society, it is the men who were/are considered stewards of the social order. Women were subordinated to beneficiaries, on the same order as children. But this is not a dynamic present in all cultures. I specifically said Western because there are cultures and societies that did not adopt this patriarchial model, so it's not essential. Many pre-colonial African societies, for example, held reverence for femininity. Their belief systems were centred around the female. Mother Earth, so to speak. Western, Judeo-Christian society has decidedly patriarchial ideological roots. God is masculine. I'm not so sure the lesson gleamed from this is that women should be grateful to be taken care of though. Also there was a lot of waste and inefficiency in having half the population relegated solely to domesticity, especially as technology allows much of that work to be offloaded. And I don't think it's fair to attribute humanity's expanded life expectancy to men, as if it was some benevolent labour of love we gifted on women. It was only until recent technological/medical breakthroughs that life expectancy shot up. It's still currently pretty low in places with high levels of patriarchal influence and low levels of economic and technological development.
