It's an American thing trust me. I grew up in Canada and always felt good about being black or at the very least I was always at ease and had no insecurities. Having lived in America it's clear that the casually white supremacist society thoroughly affects the way blacks there see themselves. I think it's just the fact that institutionalized racism is so much more prevalent there and the history of American black people is profoundly brutal and extremely racialized. The poverty, wealth gap, slavery, crack, ghettoes, Jim Crow/lynchings, police brutality, employment discrimination, stereotypes, media etc. logically will get to you eventually. In a lot of people it manifests as self hatred/a desire to be white.
Canada definitely has some bullshyt here and there (Africville
) but let's be real TS, we have it easy. Blacks are treated like a different species in the States and have next to no economic or social power. And almost every black Canadian is an immigrant so we aren't necessarily automatically disadvantaged nor were we ever forced to define ourselves through a white perspective in our time here. We came to Canada of our own volition for a better chance.

The media and popular culture are constantly instilling insecurity in people so that they will keep on being mindless consumers. Everybody can feel like they are too short, too tall, too light, too dark, too Asian, too white, too black etc.
Its not just limited to black folk. Nowadays, white women tan like crazy and some even get butt injections. There are tons of whiteboys in Iowa who want to be black so bad because of worldstarhiphop and MTV Jams. It is a popular practice in Asia for women to get eyelid surgery to eliminate their ethnic Asian features of chinky eyes.
It varies from person to person. It also varies on different areas. I have known a lot of blacks and latinos born and raised in predominantly white suburbia who could easily be characterized as acting white or wanting to be white. These folks refuse to hang around or date people of their own race and lust after white men/white women and listen to white music and things of that nature. But at the end of the day, they are a product of their environment. Same thing with a non-black person who grows up in the hood or a predominantly black environment.
But there ain't no denying that there are a lot of Uncle Ruckuses out there. America is a white supremacist society at the end of the day. The media brainwashes people into thinking white is right and black is wrong.

I dont think blacks who hate being black is an exclusively american thing at all. Its rampant in countries with communities who have a minor or major amount of european or semite blood like black brazilians, black sudanese, black dominicans, cape verdeans, ... For a large part its due to the stigma they have on them in their societies for being slave descendants. They be doing everything they can to cling on that little 10 or 20% white blood they have. In the USA this is prevented by the one drop rule which is not existing there.
