Article basically shyts on NYC ball players currently in the league and upcoming prospects. The author also states that the shift in hip hop culture somewhat is to blame for the lack of talent. What the author fails to realize is that most hoods are disappearing in NYC and so are their inhabitants. No young kids in the park playing ball, no hoops legends to go pro.

Around this time last year, Roy Hibbert commented on how his teammate Lance Stephenson—playing the role of provocateur in the Pacers-Heat series at the time—always felt the need to tell folks where he's from.

“In practice he says, ‘Brooklyn, Brooklyn. I’m from Brooklyn.' ... He has a little swag about him,” Hibbert told Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

The thing is, Stephenson didn’t really have to tell anyone about his origins. His playing peers and hoops junkies are well aware that Born Ready (his Rucker Park given name) is from Gotham. He was a teenage legend, much like his Lincoln High predecessors, Stephon Marbury and Sebastian Telfair.

And his game is distinctly New York. People play basketball with style and verve all over the world now (for instance, Ricky Rubio's from Barcelona). But earlier in May, when Stephenson skipped up the court, hopped in the air and threw a no-look bounce pass against the Hawks in the first round of the playoffs, well, that was a Coney Island thing.

Topic has been beaten to death. It's not that kids stopped playing ball. They just aren't very good. The few that are move away and the HS system is just flawed and corrupted.

I also don't see how being from the hood is a prerequisite since some of the best schools and breeding grounds aren't in the hood. The Cage is in the Village. Some of the best schools are in nice areas

the demise of the NYC amatuer hoops scene can be traced directly to when the AAU hoops scene went to shyt with the Riverside Church clusterfukk. Also another factor is alot of families relocating down South, the BX gonna lose out on claiming Prince Ali.

The hood was where you went to showcase your skills. Its where you made your name. I know growing up in BK, we traveled to Brownsville, East NY, Red Hook, Ft. Greene and many other hoods to play ballers from there who I would play later in Nike tournaments as well as other parks in the city.

I do think the PSAL system is flawed though.

Meh.. I think it was more of a situation where NY being the biggest media market could better promote their local talents. NY is gigantic in a way that all talents from nearby cities/boroughs can get together and play each other. Unlike most other cities who dont have as easily accessible public transportation infrastructure NYC has to bring talented kids from 20 miles out together to play each other.

How many great or even very good players have been from NY? I'm sure it's a high number i'm sure but ut's not as overwhelmingly high as you would think. Thing is NY breaths and bleeds basketball but their representation in the pros is lower than expected because a lot of the cats put a premium on style and often lack substance.

Chicago and L.A.seems to have produced more NBA greats when i think about it but i could be wrong.

its interesting but the NY bball scene isn't as cut and dry as alot of places and the Lenny Cooke and Telfair stories should give you a glimpse into what these cats deal with just getting thru high school. The vultures come around, theres pressure and alot of these cats have maturity issues IMO. They are dealing with the real shyt experience that living in the hood "provides" and then suddenly they are catered to and put in the position of the anointed one.

I went to a basketball powerhouse here in NY (which I wont name) and I've seen the shyt myself. The school would put more priority on bball and being in class with these cats you just knew that they weren't taking shyt seriously. Even the cats who weren't going to a big conference school were on some "fukk it" type shyt. I feel like the NBA discipline needed to make the league is missing here in NY and you have cats more willing to show off they style on the court rather than their bball IQ. College coaches wont tolerate that shyt unless you are on some LeBron shyt and the fukkery that comes with these cats wont be tolerated on a college campus when you have programs that can recruit the best talent in the nation.

The luster of NY bball is gone and left after the Felipe Lopez era because hype doesnt equal a well rounded player, conference titles, national titles or an NBA championship. I feel like players here are into the sport but they put the lifestyle that could come with it on the same level and thats where shyt starts breaking apart. Riding by on raw talent isn't gonna get you anywhere unless your starting 5 all has that level of talent and y'all are flat out beasting on teams on some Shaq shyt and cant be stopped.

And having a bunch of the Catholic school programs (Rice, Tolentine, etc) shut down forever doesnt help matters either (more will close eventually)

if they have other options available city kids should avoid PSAL schools like they have the plague, go the prep route or CHSAA, outside of Lincoln, the majority of them are doing kids a disservice by not guiding them through the proper classes grades 9-12 to make sure they are college eligible. There a ton of kids that have either slipped through the cracks or gone the JUCO route because they don't have the proper grades and/or requirements to get into a 4 year college after HS.

And another thing. The Rucker ain't even the best tournament in the city anymore. Dyckman is. Rucker is where you go when Dyckman is filled to capacity. The only people that go to Rucker regularly are art barr ass nikkas that reminisce about Earl Monroe and shyt
