So they gave the rights back to him for 20K?
It wasn't 20,000 actually it was 350k..well sorta. It was just great timing and a great business move by Lucas. Lucas directed one of the highest blockbuster hits in American Graffitti at the time which made 200 million from just a 700k budget. Lucas was only paid 150k for that. Fox didn't believe in Star Wars but they just did it because they liked what he did with American Graffitti. Lucas was supposed to be paid 500k for Star Wars but he then told them he'll stay at his regular 150k pay-scale if they let him keep all the merchandising rights and all the rights to any sequeals. This sounded like a great deal to fox because they had just lost money in the merchandising business with Dr. Dolittle and they didn't think the movie would make any noise so they didn't care that he kept the rights to the sequel. And the rest is history.
What's crazy is Lucas is probably the wealthiest director and he's only directed 6 movies, 4 of them being Star Wars flicks
. Sometimes it pays to believe in yourself.
the website isn't even about taxis though
