Bluesky Previews: subscriptions
2/40
rea @saeri.xyz
1. yes this is real, i wouldnt have the motivation to fake something like this. see
[Subs] Draft by estrattonbailey · Pull Request #6977 · bluesky-social/social-app
2. obviously wip, please dont bully the devs if some of this stuff changes between now and release
3/40
rea @saeri.xyz
just for the record, it may be possible that the perks, except the badge, will be held back for some time while they work on putting out fires (source: the pr)
they are however entertaining the idea of offering a discount for early subscribers

rea @saeri.xyz
took a nap and my post exploded, hi
to be perfectly clear if anyone at bluesky wants me to delete the post, i will comply. spreading dubious information is about the last thing i want to be doing
(im already debating locking replies and quotes to extinguish things a bit)

@0x0.boo
I wouldn't worry about it, the code is right there and if you take it down someone else will just put it up, it's done
Relax and have a nice weekend <3

I’m okay with having a fee based membership for those who want extra perks but I would hope they would still make it free. If I have to pay then I’m out because I have been jobless for two years and I can’t afford to do anything outside of basic bills and food.

dan @danabra.mov
just flagging that this is a UI mockup and the list of features doesn’t necessarily match what will be released. we need to get better at avoiding setting expectations via mockups since it’s open source so people poke at every branch
9/40
dan @danabra.mov
so we’re sorry for the confusion! some of these are likely to make it but please don’t take this as an actual list of planned features. we’ll announce the actual list when more work is done.
10/40
dan @danabra.mov
(also, the “coming soon” here is also just testing ui treatment and doesn’t at all mean these things are coming soon)
11/40
dan @danabra.mov
bluesky is an open source product which is unusual: anyone outside the company can look at feature drafts, prototypes and unfinished work. it is common in other companies to post a piece of code internally with placeholder text and then replace it before going live, but in our case it *starts* live
12/40
JYC @jyc.dev
Yes, most of people don't realize this. But please continue and lead the way to be the new normal!
Lot of folks, want this platform to be different & sustainable, and we are willing to support (without anything in return). But even "a lot", is probably not enough.
You will find the way
13/40
Lady Stryx @amstryx.bsky.social
I still think they need a means of providing a donation option for those who want to support this platform but can't/won't do subscriptions.
Maybe give a perk that's available forever after a 1-time donation.
The in-line translation and bookmarks should definitely be free features though.
14/40
Cheshire Fatorum @cheshirefatorum.bsky.social
I see the point for bookmarks, but translations cost money, so we'll have to pay for them one way or another.
Google & Co make them free for end users, not for other companies.

Sidewalk Pirate @sidewalkpirate.bsky.social
$8 is pricy. Way out of my range. We are on a budget. I hate that poor people are kept outside the window again.
I get they need the support, but ugh.
17/40
Brooklyn Buckets @brooklynbuckets.bsky.social
18/40
Tianna Mortis @tiannamortis.bsky.social
I’ll definitely be subbing as soon as they offer it. Even if the features stayed the same, I’m fine supporting the site to help keep it awesome and ad free.
19/40
Maddie Rae Gun @maddieraegun.bsky.social
Yeah please don’t do this. This kinda shyt is exactly why we all left Twitter (well that and the rampant transphobia)
20/40
mommert @mommert.bsky.social
This is how the platform continues to exist without relying on ads. There's no indication that the paid features of Twitter will inform how this works, there shouldn't be anything like bumped up replies.
21/40
Liberal Rebound @rebound.liberalrepublic.org
I might get it just to support them, but before anyone gets mad, keep in mind you can use alternate clients which effectively give you the same benefits for free, and this isn't going to algo boost you at all like it does on twitter.

Mike Aparicio @peruvianidol.com
I’ll pay $72 just to upload my own GIFs and not look like an idiot when only the first frame shows like a JPG.
23/40
Safe Muffins @safemuffins.vip
You can already do this. Hit the video upload button and select your gif.
It works. I tested it. It was added in the last update I believe.
24/40
Mike Aparicio @peruvianidol.com
Does it work in the iOS app or only on web? Because last I tried, it didn't work.
25/40
Safe Muffins @safemuffins.vip
Cant speak to that, PC/Android here. I tested it via PC firefox.
Pretty sure
Mike Masnick (@mmasnick.bsky.social) posted about it, and I then tested it for myself.
26/40
Mike Aparicio @peruvianidol.com
Thanks, I'll check it out!

@maxverse.bsky.social
I will happily pay for this app to stay as it is
30/40
Ronnie @puppygirlronnie.bsky.social
Don't love it, but I understand it's this or advertising, and this is probably better.
31/40
Soren @synthsoren.bsky.social
I will sub in a heartbeat.
Anything to kick more sand in Musk's stupid eyes
32/40
mike_br @mikebr.bsky.social
Please don't do a sub badge
33/40
Vargulfen @vargulfen.com
No way I would buy premium xitter but I won't hesitate to buy a sub to help keep this place MAGAT free.
34/40
Jay @jdbatts79.bsky.social
This is just so stupid. I feel like the site needs actual verification of noteworthy users like old Twitter, not badges for random people who pay money. If you need to raise money from users ask for donations or something
35/40

gabriel

@gabrielandworms.bsky.social
It's this or ads, so I get it, but I think $8 a month is a little much. A lower price might make people more willing to get a sub
36/40
Laurens @laurenshof.online

thanks for sharing!

Not that we don’t appreciate what you do but I can think of a few things I’d prefer over subscriptions. If you need to make money I understand totally, but as far as stuff that benifits us I’d say work on being able to pm images first. It would really help artists
38/40
Snailbunny Designs

@snailbunnydesigns.bsky.social
I just realized you aren’t the dev, well that response is more for them but seriously I would love to be able to pm images so I don’t have to communicate on freaking deviantart for commission work
39/40
rahaeli @rahaeli.bsky.social
The reason they haven't enabled images in DMs yet is because it's a really common abuse vector and allowing people to swap images one-on-one privately is a serious risk for the company (you can probably guess what people use it for, sigh).

Snailbunny Designs

@snailbunnydesigns.bsky.social
ahhh yes that is an issue. I just wish there was a way around it without major privacy issues. It would be so much easier than switching programs. Also DA really sucks and I want to have an excuse to just not use it.
