It appears the UFC and FOX promotional push ofConor McGregor, and McGregor’s own hyping, paid off.

According to FOX, Sunday’s UFC Fight Night 59 card was FOX Sports 1’s most-watched MMA event yet and the most-watched on cable since the UFC’s TUF 10 Finale in December 2009.

UFC Fight Night 59 was headlined by McGregor (17-2 MMA, 5-0 UFC) and his second-round TKO of Dennis Siver (22-10 MMA, 11-7 UFC), which earned him a featherweight title shot against champion Jose Aldo. The brash Irishman promised many things, from first-round finishes to record-breaking gates and TV numbers.

The event took place at TD Garden in Boston, with a heavily Irish crowd in attendance to support Dublin native McGregor and two of his teammates, Cathal Pendred and Patrick Holohan, who picked up wins on the preliminary card.

The main card peaked in the final 15 minutes of the live broadcast, during the main event between midnight and 12:15 a.m. ET, with 3.162 million viewers. The average viewership was 2.751 million, according to the Nielsen ratings.

According to FOX, UFC Fight Night 59 was the top ad-supported cable program on Sunday, and No. 2 for all television outside NFL programming in the key male demographics from 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54. Sunday also saw the NFC and AFC Championship games, with the NFC game on FOX wrapping up just before UFC Fight Night 59 went live on FOX Sports 1, and the AFC game on CBS taking place during the preliminary card.

In addition, during the main card, FOX Sports 1 was the top ad-supported cable network. Overall for the day, FOX Sports 1 averaged 522,000 viewers, making it its third best day ever.

The UFC Fight Night 59 prelims averaged 908,000 viewers, according to FOX, despite going up against the AFC Championship on CBS. From 9:45-10 p.m. ET, it peaked with 1.486 million viewers. That made it the second-best set of UFC prelims in FOX Sports 1 history for a non-pay-per-view main card.

The UFC and FOX’s family of networks were aggressive in their promotion of the event, including in-game promos during the NFC Championship and a Saturday movie marathon on FX hosted by McGregor.

Prior to the fight between McGregor and Siver, Donald Cerrone (26-6 MMA, 14-3 UFC) topped Benson Henderson (21-5 MMA 9-3 UFC) in a close unanimous decision in the co-main event.

Mma is not going to overtake a sport that's been around for over a century, and its kind of a silly argument in itself. Due to being around much longer, Boxing is engrained in the peoples minds, and the talent pool is much larger. You can't compare the two. MMA can overtake boxing. Just because a sport has been around longer doesn't mean it will always be bigger (baseball and football).

I'm glad that Conor is doing numbers, but Klitschko and Jennings was on premium cable. I wouldn't directly compare the two programs.

This is so true. Rich people literally drop thousands in casinos like it aint nothing. Hell i was in VEgas this past weekend and was playing roulette with this dude. I did pretty good myself and won like $600, but this dude i was playing with (some old white dude) some how won like 20K! Then he proceeded to lose like $50K! I'm sitting there like , meanwhile the dude had the most nonchalant look on his face. ala Truly astonishing.

It's obvious that this dude was rich and couldn't give a damn about losing 50K, but couldn't he just give that 50K to his employees or something? The casino is really the only place rich people feel comfortable fukking off millions without a care in the world it seems.

Rich people don't get or stay rich by being generous. If breh really was down with gifting 50k to his employees he wouldn't be as likely to have such a large personal salary, due to a lack of materialism and greed, and he would also likely pay his employees better, leading to the paradox of:
1. Considering the improved (assuming a minimum of a double digit increase) wages of his employees, would he still feel the need to make it rain 50k on em?
2. If he really was so generous and took a low salary, could he afford to drop 50k on said employees?

with Jon Jones out... only man that can take over UFC thats on the rise is.... Conor Mcgregor.. an up and coming pound for pound fighter, with the intensity of Pacquiao and the brash and confidence of Mayweather. Dude's going to be a problem in MMA. A featherweight/lightweight that can potentially move up to middleweight in the future, given his skill set.

Ya the insecure ones that ya can't admit that a man with absolutely 0 knowledge of grappling can hypothetically lose to a grappling master who's also sick with the muay thai or another striking skill.
