Biproduct of egg production. The male chics are culled because they can't produce eggs and selective breeding of egg chickens makes them undesirable as meat producing chickens (broilers). They're sexed and culled at a day old, supposedly 7B each year. You'd think there'd be some other use for them, but they commonly grind them up or suffocate them.

If a serial killer murdered your mother. Would you be any more likely to forgive him if he did it peacefully versus violently? I personally would be just as angry regardless of the cause of death.
