There's a boot camp for former athletes devoted to creating the next Stephen A :mjlol:

NYTimes Article: The Boot Camp for N.B.A. Hot Takes and Analysis

Sports talk is fukked.
Yeah it's just obvious that's what the masses want. They don't want to see people break down game film, really discuss sports from an analytical level. I think I said this before here, but there's a great Youtube channel by Kurt Warner going into detail about various football topics. Less than 100K subscribers. No one gives a fukk.

Look at this video: - you have a multiple MVP, Super Bowl Champ, Hall of Famer breaking down game film, telling you the coverages, going through the QB thought process.... 4K views. People want to watch a buffoon like SAS get on the air and say "DAK PRESCOTT IS A BONAFIDE SCRUB". People like that.

Wilbon, Kornheiser, Foxworth and even that jit Pablo are all educated, but they actually come across as genuine and engaging when discussing sports. Bo just not entertaining or likeable. Foxworth is actually who Bo thinks he is :yeshrug:

Bomani comes across as engaging and genuine, only if you can get past the snark :mjlol:

I said it in this thread earlier... Understand why it's off-putting for a lot of people.

The sports talk realm has been going in the exact opposite direction of Bomani Jones for years now. There is no room for reserved, grounded sports discussions. Everything has to be bombastic, resentful, and curated for viral moments. This is not me saying he's the smartest man in the room, I'm just saying he has no interest in pretending to be the dumbest man in the room, which is what ESPN/FSN/etc want.

Yeah he's kinda a man with no country. He's definitely an academic and intelligent but he has a very difficult time not coming across as smug which puts a hard cap on his marketablity.

I don't know who would consume the content he'd be best at putting out. It certainly would be an extremely niche audience. Kinda hard to put him up vs the minstrel shows with SAS, Shannon and the like

I disagree with both these takes. The same lane that got him into the spotlight is still there. People still want to hear sports analysis/opinions from an educated brother w/o the theatrics. It will never capture the same audience as First Take, but that was never the goal imo.

Bomani has a unique perspective that I always enjoyed hearing whenever he didn't lean too far into super liberal territory.

The bigger issue is that Bomani is NOT a mainstream personality. And a sports show on HBO was just a bad fit.

I think he fits better as a sidekick/co-host, it's clear he's not a leading act

Nah, I beg to differ. When he had his local show here in Raleigh, his show was EASILY the most popular one on the station, and there was a near revolt on the last day of his show by the listeners. Not just brehs; you had local rednecks and such who rocked with the show too. I distinctly remember one calling the show in tears because the Three Hour Lunch Break was going off the air. Then when he moved on to Sirius and the Score, he had Corey and Sasha to play off, but it was still HIS show. Losing that one really hurt him, as he's even said, because that was, in his mind, THE perfect setup. He's very capable of leading a radio show. TV just might not be it for him. I've had enough personal interaction with him and seen him work with the public to know it can work. I think it just has to be the right situation and format.

This isn't the first time they've tried and it's gone bad though. Maybe podcasts are better but the live audience thing is not it. Maybe he works better riffing off someone else.

Yeah I don't think the TV thing is working out. I'd say he's definitely been at his best in the podcast/radio space. Problem is, he likes the money and has probably gotten accustomed to a certain lifestyle that he couldn't rock putzing around on local radio or even on satellite.

This is an interesting (dare I say) take, but I'm curious. I agree he's not a mainstream personality, but I'm saying that's because the mainstream in sports talk is heavily vested in hot take bullshyt. And that's not his lane so he has no real place at ESPN or other sports venues. If you agree he's not mainstream, where do you feel is a good fit for him?
