Nah, I'm talking more about these Hip-Hop min-docs that can depictYou're thinking of PBS.
Which no one watches.![]()
Hip-Hop in a way that's very 2-dimensional.
People will cover a given city or scene but when they do, it might be just one style
of Hip-Hop. For example someone might do coverage of "The Chi" but their coverage
begins and ends at drill music so a mikkey halsted or vakill won't get a look.
Or they might cover N.Y. and only check out Desiigner or Asap Rocky and a Joey BadA$$ or
Skyzoo will get looked over.
I didn't say that's the case with (all of) Noisey's mini docs or even the case with the one
this thread is on but as recently as January I was watching season 1 of a show that came out
in 2015 which covered Chicago and it's Hip-Hop scene. Sure enough there was much talk about
"the hood", allusions to gun violence and an over representation of Drill Rap artists (as in
they were the only ones covered...). Of course they helped to present a balanced, human view
of the artists in the scene (Sasha Gohard, King Louie etc.) but how that part of the episode
was advertised prior to them actually showing the segment you'd think they were about to be in
the middle of a shootout or something.
