@Miles Davis I hope you are still on track to finishing Warmth of Other Suns, breh.

-------------------------------

Brehs, so I've been recently delving into The Slave Ship - by Marcus Rediker. :wow:

I've long been meaning to really have a source-able understanding of the Atlantic Slave Trade and this book is a GEM so far w/ a lot of great information that has both confirmed many of my stances, changed other opinions I've had and just been a humbling literary trip.

I highlighted one of the interesting paragraphs.

:ohhh: I will have to read more about this.

@The Odum of Ala Igbo thoughts???

Haven't read thru the whole thread yet so I'm not sure if anybody recommended scribd.com

It's basically if you merged netflix and audible. For $9/month (if you're a student, it's $5) you have access to a bunch of different audiobooks, pdf's and other stuff. Their selection isn't as big as the one at Audible but it's still pretty good.

You can try it free for a month.

Real useful book personally. I'm 3/4 done with it.

duly noted. I just placed it on hold at my library.

can you give a review of it so far

just finished this book. it was a cool enough read to where I'm currently listening to his other book, "DRIVE: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us"

I thought it was interesting that we form our circle of friends somewhat based on how much time we think we have left.

I thought it was interesting that it's been proven that the longer an employee takes to respond to his manager's email, the less satisfied they are.

I thought it was interesting that the way you frame situations with time, totally change your outlook on it (the chocolate test).

There was one more thing I wanted to mention but it's slipping my mind, atm

Curious to know more about the bolded. Could you go into more detail?

Basically people tend to believe that the older we get the lonelier we are. We retire so we don't have work friends, our actual friends start dying, and we just become grumpy old people overall.

The truth is, though, that we selectively cut people out of our lives and focus on the ones that are most important.

We do that because since we feel like we're running out of time, we want to make the best of it.

The same pattern was shown with Highschool and college seniors vs freshmen, as well as people having to move away, etc.

One of the things I took the most from the book was the apparent evidence of the impact of breaks/rest on work productivity and decision making.

I might check out Daniel Pink's other book "To Sell is Human"

I just finished this book from Breaking Brown Book club.

Terrible how so many black Americans were robbed of the biggest social programs like The GI Bill that gave loans, funding for education and aprenticeships to whites and exluded large swathes of black Americans.

Pretty devasting.
