Carl Hiaasen - Fever Beach
He always does funny books but this one is about MAGA down in Florida and is hilarious so far.
I got onto Hiaasen a few months ago when I found out about the Bad Monkey show. I've only read Skin Tight so far but I enjoyed it. He reminds me of Elmore Leonard

Might have to see about Fever Beach:jbhmm:

Well, this one right here was one mf ride :whew: .

Like I said before, the first 40 or so pages is one of the coldest openings to a story there is. It's not even super gory or anything but it is brutal. King & these got damn dawgs :mjcry:

From there, it's heavy on the meditative stare of mind as a creative, trauma recovery + the psychology of how art & the shyt that happens to us feed each other. SK is always at his best with this introspective shyt, leaving now stone unturned.

There is a little bit of a lull in here that's tough to get through. Thematically, it drives a point home, but in the moment, a nicca needed a 'smoke break'.
full

Then of course this mf wanna turn up and have this bih shift straight up into a supernatural horror, all pedal no brakes :gucci:

I've seen the ending get mixed reviews but it left me satisfied :ehh:

I haven't read Duma Key yet but it is on my list to read this year

Rattlesnakes in You Like It Darker has some connections to Duma Key and is a sequel to Cujo

Haven't read Cujo yet (familiar with it tho), but I can see the Duma Key connection for a cpl reasons that I won't spoil :ehh:

Rattlesnakes is def more toned down than both tho.

Loved Cujo. Had it as my number one King book for a while.
I would suggest reading The Dead Zone first if you do decide to read Cujo

Read Blood in the Sand by Andrew Quiller
It's the fourth book in The Gladiator series which I didn't know before buying. It's a short fun action story that is written like the spy/adventure novels of the 70s but set in Ancient Rome. The kills in this book were :ohlawd:
I liked it so much that I found and bought the first three from eBay. Unfortunately the fifth book was never released in the US so I'll have to buy the UK edition which is fine but the shipping price is

Just finished reading Mother Night by Kurt Vonnegut jr
This book made me think about Apt Pupil but not nearly as bleak. The story is of the notes written by an American spy who was a nazi propagandist in Germany who is sitting in jail in Jerusalem while waiting trial

Underground Railroad: Slaves vs Zombies

Did a beta read on an advanced copy of what I presume to be this brehette's 1st book. Cool lil concept. Slaves vs. “sonbis” + freedom portals. It felt a little rushed. It was only 212 pages but that wasn't really the issue as much as she's gonna need a hard edit before release. Characters underdeveloped, moments not allowed to breathe, etc. But overall, a good read...right in that wheel house of my next read below, and the other recent haint/undead explosion using grounded black horror. Respect to the brehette for the vision, and I can see the potential once it gets tightened up.

Ring Shout
Speaking of concise reads....this is the way to do it. Far from perfect but tight and efficient. Definitely get them Lovecraftian vibes. Grand Cyclops could've cooked a little longer maybe, and them night doctors, but a 🔥 novella overall. I can easily see why some were suggesting it as a reason after Sinners. Lots of similarities :ehh:
