GKMC thematically and lyrically is a masterpiece, but to me Born Sinner may be a little better sonically and extremely close lyrically. Ultimately I think GKMC will stand the test of time better and is the all around better album, but not by much and to me Born Sinner is just better riding music. J. Cole redeemed himself big time. I've been MIA the past week so I don't know if this has been discussed if it has just elaborate on and discuss the next part of my post.

I believe strongly that years ago J. Cole's mixtapes and introduction to the game helped breathe life into a near dead genre (in terms of quality) and then Kendrick's album brought it back to life fully and helped usher in an amazing run for real Hip-hop that has me feeling real nostalgic and like there is some hope yet for the art form we all know and love.

These past 2 weeks have been probably the most exciting run for me in hip-hop since the early 2000s (Jay/Nas, Roc & SP vs DBlock etc)

The ignorance of your response barely merits one from me but fukk it I'm up early and bored.."Nope" to what exactly? There's many different points covered in my OP.

If you don't like Cole and Kendrick this thread clearly isn't for you.

Born Sinner is boring. Various reviews such as NeedleDrop and Dead End Hip Hop agree

I disagree man, on first listen I thought the same thing but then my boy got passes to his show at the TLA in Philly so I said fukk it let me give it a full listen before the show in case he's doing new shyt, and it's a real solid album straight thru. I'm not really concerned with what the reviews say, various reviews say Yeezus is a masterpiece and to me it's garbage.

Not to mention I've seen pretty much all the living greats live and Cole puts on just as good a live show as anyone I've ever seen and I've seen him 3 times now and each show has gotten better.

Good Kid m.A.A.d City is a masterpiece of the genre. A TRUE classic and the first Hip Hop classic debut since College Dropout. I listen to that album damn near everyday. lyrically enthralling, sonically engaging, and thematically captivating it's perfect in every since of the word..

Born Sinner was good, an enjoyable listening experience but in my opinion, no where CLOSE to GKMC. Kendrick made a concept album so cohesive that you simply CANNOT listen to it in patches, its a complete body of work from beginning to end. Born Sinner's musical narrative isn't as captivating nor is it as lyrically dense. Again, taking nothing away from J.Cole but Kendrick is the more creative MC

What you said about not being able to listen to GKMC in patches is what made me say Born Sinner is better riding music. GKMC is like an amazing movie, ala The Godfather, that you only put on on like a holiday or a rainy weekend when u can block out the outside world and just take the whole masterpiece in.

Where as Born Sinner I can just throw on at anytime and either let it ride out straight thru or pick and choose. As nuts as it sounds, the very thing that makes GKMC so amazing somewhat hurts its replay value in the sense that it's not an everyday album. Although I can knock some songs on their own I completely agree, as would anyone else who appreciates it for what it is, the true genius in it lies in listening to it straight thru.

Often great "riding" music, is stuff you don't really listen properly too. Just some chill stuff, nice production. Doesn't make it a masterpiece or anything close.

J. Cole makes pleasant music. Good beats, good rapping. That's it. For me, his music lacks ambition and flair. Born Sinner is a more consistent CD/LR-era Kanye with more flows, no guest appearances.

GKMC has ambition and it has the masterpiece records. It's a record that can't be copied, even by the man himself. J. Cole could make another Born Sinner next year.

I'd never call that ignorance, I completely agree GKMC is a masterpiece, though I think Cole all around is pretty close to Kendrick.

Exactly. GKMC is just uniquely magnificent. You can tell that album came from the very depths of Kendrick's soul. It CANNOT be copied nor emulated, there will NEVER be another album of its kind again. It's Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, Ready To Die territory. It captures Hip Hop at a particular moment in time as well as introduces a young, hungry, prodigiously talented MC to the masses. I'll be listening to GKMC when I'm 40 years old, in FULL. I MIGHT be listening to a song or two off Born Sinner at that time period, but it won't have the same emotional impact as GKMC

I agree with almost all of what you said but even when I'm driving I'm giving Born Sinner a proper listen and he has some serious gems on there, a lot of it is just chill riding music but there is some ambition on there though certainly not like what Kendrick did with GKMC.
