A few Floors Down from the Daily Grind
I've been living abroad for years now and the one question almost everyone asks me is why would I come here from America. They can't conceptualise why I would leave the US for any other country.

Put it this way, which country would you rather have a brain tumor in?
I can tell you the Dutch company I work for, the guy who moved his family to America for 4 years had his wife and kids crying about having to go 'home'.

I want to travel to Europe more, and soon, and I wouldn't mind spending a year over there, but you don't truly realize, warts and all, how many freedoms you have here in the states until see how other people live.

Socialized medicine....OMG, it's so great, we all get treatment and get treated the same.......we just have slower care, and huge flat tax rates on all your earnings and usually don't have access to the best doctors.

I dunno....grass is always greener to me, but you should at least go see something else to better understand whats most important to you.

And until you travel abroad, you don't realize how much happier people in the rest of the world are.

I'd rather have huge flat taxes than have to file for bankruptcy just to keep a loved one alive, after all medical costs are the leading cause of people going broke, but hey USA USA USA.

That American exceptionalism gets engrained in people at a young age when in reality this country ain't shyt on sooo many levels. The ONLY reason I don't up and leave now is family. I have a big family but I'm very tight with my younger siblings and mom. She's done everything on her own but now relies on me more and more for morale and financial support. For now travel will have to do. I love threads like these.

One thing I don't see mentioned on here is about the costs. How much were you guys spending once you touched down in Brazil? Are the hotels affordable and have any of you experimented with hostels/coachsurfing?

It depends on where you are flying from. But from DC the ticket is btw 950 and 1300.

Hotels are about the same prices as the US. I stayed in both a hotel and rented an apartment. I don't like the hotels as it feels too much like being in the US. Apartment prices range depending on the area but I think you can get a good one for about 100 per night.

So about 50 US Dollars? I see the exchange rate is on our side. I'm not too worried about plane costs, b/c I have family in the airline industry so I'll just get a standby tickets from them.

Do they have train travel btw cities in Brazil ex: Sao Paulo and Rio?

I was using USD in the prices I gave. I am not sure about trains. I know they have a bus system. I flew from Salvador to Rio.

I'm not that guy, so curb the USA nonsense. My wife is from Canada and lost her mom to cancer at 52 so I could explain in very great detail all the nuances of the health care systems like they were a 6'11 17 year old if you'd like.

If you'd rather live somewhere else, more power to you, but in my experiences in Europe and working for multinational companies the past ten years, a vast majority of them blink at me like I'm from another planet when I talk about moving to a regional office for a year. South America may be different, but Europe is filled with high taxes, lack of choices, limited prosperity and jobs (unless your German) and 1,000 years of petty political and cultural turmoil confronting you at ever turn. Our company has nothing but requests from other offices to come to America. At this point we have a Italian, Mexican, Indian and Dutch guy all in our 25 person office from that very request process.

People should be adventurous enough to find a place they are happiest, but don't act like for a lot of the world, that place isn't right here.

check out airbnb for good apartment deals too...u can find nice spots for less than $100 USD.....no train from SP to Rio but the bus ride is cool for about 40 bucks one way...I've done it a bunch of times...6-7 hour ride with a stop for about 30 minutes to get something to eat

My boyfriend's son was born premature by about three. He believes in his heart that had his son not been born in Germany but in the UK than he wouldn't have survived. It's funny because in the US women are recommended to get cervical scans once a year but in the UK it's twice a year. Either the US is gauging or the UK is skimming.

You have to forgive a lot of these men. They're young and in good health. In addition to that their libido is paramont.

I've hear good things about Germany and my boyfriend would have settled there had it not been for the language barrier.

I honestly think the avg person says this because they aren't where they want to be in life. I rarely see people that feel satisfied with their life like I'm ready to roll out of the US and when I do its almost always them dudes that are not doing particularly well here. US is great for me and of others don't like it cool but the rationale at times at least I hear be the equivalent of that movie the new guy where cats trying to switch up how people see them stuff

Sorry to hear that but cancer is cancer breh, sometimes there's just nothing you can do about, in this country people throw their life savings at fighting it and end up dying just the same.

Eh, immigration into the United States is slowing and people are returning to their home countries in record numbers, my personal experiences differ from yours and the places I've been people are genuinely happy :yeshrug: All those things you say about Europe, and yet quality of life, happiness and things you really can't place a value you on are higher there than here. You're a white male, this country is a lot different for you than it is for me.

I'm doing fine here, the difference is I have lived abroad and the only reason I returned was because my family was here and I missed them, I didn't miss this place one bit.

I know this is common when not talking to people directly but I wasn't talking about you since I don't know your situation. I'm just saying in general when I hear stuff like, that its usually dudes that aren't doing good here so of course they want to do the switch school thing and est a new identity flow. I rarely see cats that are happy in all parts of their life they care about like I'm ready to move out the US. Visit other places yeah but permanently move nah that's what I'm speaking on. I also believe you to be an outlier because in general do people move from successful situations just because? I don't think so but I could be wrong

Successful people in this country kill themselves :yeshrug: professional success does not equal happiness and very few people in life are happy about all parts of their life to begin with. Despite all these successful people the US is the number 1 consumer of anti-depressants in the world, so it can't be all rosy here.
