I know this a old thread, but do the people in Brazil speak English? Do you have to have some skill level in Spanish? I plan on going this summer alone.

If you are a fluent spanish speaker, and speak it slow (portuguese is spoke in a slow rythm compared to spanish), the typical brazilian can understand on a basic interacion level.

I can speak english and I thought it was waaay more common, but basically, even in largely populated areas, people often can understand english, but not necessary speak, since the different in accent and tones (in portuguese we actually put tone on consoants)
