I swear half the country is catholic the other half is protestant, yet somehow Brazil is more liberated.
but you gotta admit, brazilians do come off as a lot more liberal in general, at least in the cities of the southeast and northeast
if you walked into a house in the US and there were pictures of the kids in the living room in bikinis, you'd assume that was a white trash family if they were american. and kids' birthday parties with parents drinking would be considered way out of line in a lot of north american circles, but it's absolutely normal in brazil.
you also talk to these families more in-depth and you find out they go to church every sunday
