Because they aren't making everyone's lives worse, just the people that either don't vote, are single issue (religious/culture war), or those that vote for the opposite party. They simply protect the interests of the white, affluent, christians, from that standpoint they are always fulfilling their role, and doing so effectively.

They would only be "making people's lives worse" if they were operating from some objective such as "increase overall wellbeing", they aren't.
