I don't think the Al Franken case was a complete fabrication or smear, but I read the Jane Mayer reporting from the New Yorker, and this is pretty similar. It's a hard call, I don't think the answer is erode norms entirely until personal conduct doesn't matter in political office anymore (or are we there already?) but it's a desperate time for Dem house/senate, and maybe there is something to be said for holding firm during these times. But, I don't really want Northam or Fairfax in office.

Of the three though, Northam is the only one who at worst was just an a-hole for dressing like that. There’s no ethics or criminal violation like the other two.
