No That's exactly how it works. You dont get in trouble for being a bad witness or not remembering anything. They screen you in advance so they wouldn't even call you to the stand in the first place if they knew you didnt recall anything or offer any useful info to their case.
Where people get in trouble is when they change their stance AFTER agreeing to take the stand for the prosecution. This is when they have already given a statement on what they were going to testify on but then get on the stand and claim they don't remember.
