They are actually called gorilla squats and are great mobility exercises for your hips mobility, Hamstring, glutes, and quads
I’ve seen this exercise used for punishment in the Army. They call them “monkey fukkers” though. It’s usually the older NCO’s who were in during the 90’s. It’s not encouraged during normal PT because if you do it incorrectly you can tear up your hamstrings.
