nikkas so used to giving individual blame/credit to things that are dependent upon others that they are :mindblown: at the concept of taking the other person out and making it a truly individual stat :mjlol:. Assists are intended to measure how well you set your teammates up, not how good your teammates are at making shots. I'm sure people will be more receptive to things like this when find a way to make them benefit a person they like :mjpls:. That said, none of those numbers sound good for Mr. Russell :francis:.

Never knew that

The amount of different stats, and different interpretations of the same data, in each sport is overwhelming. It's why every team has their own in-house analytics department with their own proprietary information.

I can promise you that when a team looks at a point guard's production, they care infinitely more about making the optimal pass/decision than whether or not he gets credited with an assist.

Luke Walton made the proper passes also but he was still trash .

Do these advanced stats consider the quality of the pass? Like hitting a guy in rhythm where he likes to receive the pass? If your passes are all at guys feet and you have no assists as a result...:manny:

Some probably do, using the on court player tracker data. But this is why I said it's not analogous to RBIs, and why more info is needed, especially in such small sample sizes.

That said, a PG constantly making these kind of mistakes probably won't be an NBA PG for very long.

Do you not understand context at all?

If you want the "assist" to be an individual stat, you basically have to remove the outcome from the equation.

This is basically putting the "but his teammates suck" argument into a quantifiable number.

These guys sound like baseball heads still defending RBIs as a major stat.

The poster who used it... used it incorrectly, and isn't making a great point with the stat. But the reason behind the statistic is legitimate. Plainly: Who creates the most scoring opportunities for their team.
