also you cant be all "loaded up with drugs" going into other countries just because our country is hella liberal when it comes to drugs and gays doesnt mean your lifestyle is welcome everywhere .

I was never in the armed forces but I did work for a defense contractor 15 years ago. When you travel to a foreign country that has a shaky relationship with the US you are absolutely a target for said country and they will be watching you. The US is not the only country with a budget for an intelligence agency.

She'll have served her purpose. They'll probably extradite her to a US prison just as a fukk you (her sentencing doesn't change, she just gets to go back home).

Singapore and China will hit you with the death penalty if you caught with a certain amount of drugs. They do not play

Ukraine wants to stand up to Russia so it turns to the US.

The US gives Ukraine full support and reaches out to its European allies to put several feet unto Russia's neck.

Russia has no choice but to threaten Nuclear war in order not to lose the Ukrainian territory to foreigners, used nuclear weapons as a deterrent for military deployment into Ukraine from several countries.

The US and the allies stick to economically attacking Russia. Russia is forced to change it's economic models to survive this ordeal.

Russia is livid at the US.

Meanwhile, an american citizen slips up in Russia. Russia does not interpret the case as just a civil case, but a case to flip the tables unto the US AND get a Russian asset at the same damn time. Their way of showing that "we're not gonna be lenient with our enemies, but we're always open to negotiations". So if the US want Griner back, they may as well bow to Russian pressure and give the arms dealers in exchange.

This is chess, not checkers.

I think this is closer to the truth than people want to believe. Russia seemingly does not have draconian drug laws like everyone is assuming in this thread. If you google "Russia cannabis" the first thing that comes up is the Wikipedia page explaining their laws with respect to cannabis:

Cannabis in Russia is illegal. Possession of up to 6 grams (or two grams of hashish) is an administrative offense, punishable by a fine or detention of 15 days. Possession of larger amounts is a criminal offense.[1][2]

Brittany had 0.7g of cannabis oil in that cartridge. That's about $20-30 dollars worth of cannabis. And they are sentencing her to 9 years.

This is bigger than a simple drug charge being over-prosecuted. They are clearly doing this for political reasons.

And I'm saying all this as someone who think its fukking stupid to bring drugs into a foreign country.

we've all seen what happens when people get outside their comfort zone and get too comfortable in a place that they've never been to before.

That movie Brokedown Palace hammered it into my head at a young age: do not fukk around with drugs in foreign countries because they does they do not play by the same rules as America.

That's just a nightmare situation being in a foreign country where you don't know the language, where the cops are10 times stricter than American police officers, and where you don't know the laws.
