And Purdy was still 7th in QBR in the entire league and 3rd in passing yards without most of the team. Can anyone dispute those facts?

He also threw the 3rd-most interceptions and the team went 6-11.

While I cannot dispute the QBR thing, personally I think that stat is fraudulent. Case in point, Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen ended the year with the same league-leading QBR (77.3).

On straight-up passing, there is no way Josh Allen -- who threw for less yards, less TDs, more INTs and had a lower completion percentage -- had a year comparable to Lamar in 2024. I also do not think that on the eye test, Jordan Love had a better year at QB than Jared Goff in 2024. But according to QBR, he did.

I say all that to say that Purdy shouldn't have been paid more than 40-45M a year. I've not seen him be able to carry a team when shyt's not perfect, and I've seen Shanahan get competent or better QB play out of way too many people for one to get paid like he's top 5-10 while he's the coach.

While I think most teams need to build it to where it shouldn't overly rely on the QB... if you pay one 50M+, he should be able to get a team to be greater than the sum of its parts. Purdy hasn't shown that consistently and frankly, the vast majority of QBs don't deserve what they are making right now.

I really wish he would’ve won that title 2 years ago because just for purposes of a future Disney biopic.

His story is crazy.

Then we have nothing to discuss. Also, $53M/year with the cap going up is actually less than Tua, Trevor Lawrence, Dak, etc...

Lean on it if you like. I get the point of advanced stats because sometimes statistics don't tell the whole story. The QBR one though... by its standards, there's a significant gap between say... Purdy and CJ Stroud, who basically had the same year stat-wise outside of CJ taking more sacks.

I don't think there's a significant gap between Purdy and Stroud. Who you like is who you like, but one isn't significantly better than the other, IMO.

At the end of the day, the Niners went 6-11 when his supporting cast went down/became washed. I would be cautious about paying that much to a QB -- especially in the Niners' system -- unless he had demonstrated that the ship keeps rolling as long as he's upright. To the Niners' credit, they've locked in that supporting cast around him for a few years.

It's less than those QBs you mention, but they didn't deserve what they got either.

Salaries are relative, so this was expected in relation to what other starting QBs get. Don't know how cats on the first pages are shocked as if DeVito got the deal.

But a lot of times I wonder how bad these GMs are at negotiating, like how many other teams would pay Purdy 50m+? Or Dak 60m+?

Yeah... I wouldn't have paid it if I was the GM, but I understand why he got it and all things considered, compared to the going rate it is a win for the Niners.

But the bolded... it's as if teams forget that their coaches had a hand in developing the QB to where he can come to the table and ask for that, or that their scouts saw it in the player to begin with. I would have made Purdy the highest-paid player on the team, sure, but not 53M. I've never understood why the Niners would even break the bank for a QB when their current coach has shown that he can get decent play out of anybody at the position with a modicum of scheme-specific ability/talent.

There's a lot of advanced stats that show Purdy's ability vs. the rest of the starters in the league but are we ready to have that conversation? Seems like your mind is made up regardless

I wonder how Mahomes feels about that 10 year 450m contract. If he signed 2 5 year deals he’d probably get 70 per year now

He might’ve paid 100 ms in insurance to guarantee 450.
