A proposal to name a Brooklyn street corner after Notorious B.I.G. has been shot down. Billboard reports that the Clinton Hill community board denied the request, which was based on a petition to name the corner "Christopher Wallace Way"

Lucy Koteen argued against the petition, noting that she had "looked up" his history and that "He started selling drugs at 12, he was a school dropout at 17, he was arrested for drugs and weapons charge, he was arrested for parole violations, he was arrested in North Carolina for crack cocaine, in 1996 he was again arrested for assault, he had a violent death, and physically the man is not exactly a role model for youth. I don't see how this guy was a role model, and frankly it offends me."

LeRoy McCarthy, who began the petition, argued for him by saying, "There are many artists that share stories in a vernacular that their audiences understand. Biggie used the language from the streets he grew up in to convey what he wanted to say." She addded that "board members should not hold Wallace's physical appearance nor how he died against him."

The proposal still has a chance if councilwoman Letitia James issues a letter of support.

I agree with the nikka 2 post above me, Big ain't do nothing positive for black people...We have way more black people that are better role models that we can name shyt after. This nikka was an entertainer and promoted ignorance his whole life, personally I'm sick of hearing about him.

She kind of had me until the violent death part. MLK had a violent death too/
As did JFK, Abraham Lincoln, 9/11 victims...

And let's keep it real here... if we want to dig into their histories, there are plenty of shytbags who have done a lot worse than the things Biggie did that have streets and schools named after them and are revered in this country... starting with Thomas Jefferson.

With all the white hipster CACs from boring ass Ohio and Nebraska taking over Brooklyn and only caring for their vegan shops, art careers, yoga practices, and jogging, why would the Community Board change the name to a rapper that has no appeal to the outside demographic of hip hop. Especially if the newcomers hate rap music and they are contributing lots of money to the city by them high rents. Don't wanna scare them out it seems.
