LIVE Brussels attacks: Latest updates
Scores of people remain in intensive care following suicide Tuesday's bomb attacks in Brussels that left 31 people dead, Belgium's health minister says.

Maggie de Block said that of about 300 wounded people, 61 were still in a critical condition, and suggested that the death toll could rise further.

Earlier, prosecutors confirmed they had identified two of the four attackers as brothers Khalid and Brahim el-Bakraoui.

Two other attackers have yet to be named. One died, another is on the run.

Brahim el-Bakraoui blew himself up in the attack at Zaventem airport that killed 11 people while Khalid struck at Maelbeek metro, where 20 people died, prosecutors said.

Unconfirmed reports say another of the attackers was the wanted jihadist Najim Laachraoui, who is thought to have links with last year's attacks in Paris.

So-called Islamic State (IS) has said it was behind the attacks.

EU interior and justice ministers are due to hold a crisis meeting in Brussels on Thursday to discuss their response to the bombings.

Ms de Block said in a statement (in French) that the injured were from 40 nationalities, and 150 were still being treated in hospitals across Belgium.

Many are suffering from burns or wounds normally seen on a battlefield, such as shrapnel injuries. The death toll, the statement said, was still "provisional".

Ms de Block added that four patients were in a coma and had not yet been identified, which was delaying the process of naming victims.

Belgium's king and queen visited the airport on Wednesday and also met some of those injured in the attacks. A minute's silence was held at midday.

Federal Prosecutor Frederic Van Leeuw said Brahim el-Bakraoui had been identified as the middle of three suspects caught in a CCTV image at the airport.

The man on the left is believed to have died at the airport. The man on the right, wearing the hat, is thought to have fled the scene.

Mr Van Leeuw said the man in the hat had left a bag containing "the biggest bomb", which later partially exploded after police had evacuated the terminal, injuring no-one.

Reports in Belgian and French media suggest the man on the left is Najim Laachraoui, but this is not confirmed. Analysts say Laachraoui is believed to be a key bomb maker, and French media say he played a key role in the terror attacks in Paris.

Mr Van Leeuw said a taxi driver had told police he had picked up the three men from an address in the Schaerbeek area of Brussels.

The apartment was raided later on Tuesday and bomb-making materials, including 15kg (33lb) of high explosive, were found.

A note from Brahim el-Bakraoui was found in a nearby rubbish bin. In it, he wrote: "I'm in a hurry (...) they're looking for me everywhere. I'm not safe any more. If I give myself up they'll put me in a cell."

Mr Van Leeuw said the brothers, who were Belgian nationals, were known to police and had criminal records. They were identified by DNA records.

Broadcaster RTBF quoted a police source saying that Khalid el-Bakraoui had used a false name to rent a flat in the Forest area of Brussels where police killed a gunman in a shootout last week.

It was during that raid that detectives found a fingerprint of Salah Abdeslam, the main suspect in the Paris terror attacks of 13 November.

He was arrested in a raid in Brussels last Friday.

Turkey said on Wednesday that Brahim was detained by Turkish officials on the border with Syria in June 2015 and deported to the Netherlands.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Belgium had "ignored our warning that this person is a foreign fighter".

Belgian Justice Minister Koen Geens said he was aware that the suspect had been deported from Turkey but denied that he had been flagged as a possible terrorist.

Belgium has raised its terrorism alert to the highest level, and its international airport will remain closed on Thursday.

I love when people fiercely argue over something they have absolutely no control over.

While I will not distance ISIS extremists from Islam itself, I am not foolish enough to assume that all Muslims are bad. I am also not foolish enough to let the actions of a$$holes somehow be parlayed into quasi support for a fascist piece of orange shyt.

@ThreeLetterAgency goddamnit man could you have at least waited a little to warp this into a fukk Islam argument? How about we let them bury the goddamn victims before we use them as a platform to shyt on Muslims wholesale.

@GinaThatAintNoDamnPuppy! stop feeding him breh.

Brussels attacks: Victims and survivors
Belgian officials have named the second suicide bomber in Tuesday's attack at Brussels airport as Najim Zaachraoui, and said that his DNA was found at sites of the November Paris attacks.

The news came as three people were arrested in Brussels in connection with the attacks.

Prosecutors said the arrests were linked to a raid in Paris on Thursday, where an attack was apparently foiled.

Other suspects have been arrested in Belgium, Germany and France.

Thirty-one people died in bombings at Brussels airport and a metro station.

The attacks came days after the arrest of Paris attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam in Brussels.

Belgian Justice Minister Koen Geens said on Friday that Abdeslam, who had initially agreed to co-operate with investigators, had ceased to do so.

"The federal prosecutor has just informed me that Salah Abdeslam no longer wants to talk since the attacks on Zaventem [airport] and the Brussels metro," he said in parliament.

So-called Islamic State (IS) has said it carried out both the Brussels and Paris attacks.

What Belgian prosecutors said about Laachraoui:
  • Left DNA on a piece of cloth at the Bataclan and on an explosive device at the Stade de France in November
  • DNA also found in a flat in Brussels and a house in Auvelais in southern Belgium, both used by the Paris bombers
  • Until this week, known only as Soufiane Kayal

Brahim el-Bakraoui has already been named as one of the perpetrators of the airport attack, which left 11 people dead. A third remains unidentified.

In the same statement, the prosecutor's office said three more arrests were made in the Forest, St Gilles and Schaerbeek districts of Brussels on Friday.

In the most recent raid, a man carrying a backpack was shot in Schaerbeek district after refusing to obey police orders, media say. Controlled explosions were carried out.

An area near Meiser square was sealed off by heavily armed police and military vehicles.

The operation has now finished and the cordon has been lifted.

Schaerbeek mayor Bernard Clerfayt said a man had been arrested and shot in the leg.

Turkey has said it arrested and deported one of the bombers, Brahim el-Bakraoui, last June, warning Belgium he was a "foreign fighter" - but the message was "ignored".

The Belgian interior and justice ministers said they had offered their resignations but the prime minister refused to accept them.

Bakraoui's brother, Khalid, struck at Maelbeek metro station, where 20 people died.

Image captionMr Kerry arrived in Belgium on Friday to meet with European leaders
Brussels attacks: Victims and survivors
At least two Americans died in the terrorist attacks on a metro station and at the airport in Brussels, a US official has confirmed.

The official did not identify the two people but confirmed their deaths as US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Belgium.

Mr Kerry is holding counter-terrorism talks with European and Belgian officials and attend a memorial.

Thirty-one people died in the attacks and scores more were injured.

So-called Islamic State (IS) militant group has said it was behind the attacks.

After meeting with Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel, Mr Kerry said "United States is praying and grieving with you for the loved ones of those cruelly taken from us, including Americans, and for the many who were injured in these despicable attacks."

The families of the two people who died in the attacks on Tuesday have been informed, the official said, but did not have any more details.

Two Dutch nationals who had been living in New York City also died in the attacks, Belgian and Dutch authorities have confirmed.

Siblings Alexander and Sascha Pinczowski were on the phone with a relative at the Brussels airport on Tuesday when the phone went dead.

The family has said they are "grateful to have closure on this tragic situation".

Media captionThe parents of Mason Wells, injured in the Brussels attacks, said he had narrowly avoided the Boston bombing and was in France during the Paris attacks
Mason Wells, a 19-year-old Mormon missionary from the US state of Utah, was badly injured in the attacks and is recovering in hospital.

Mr Wells narrowly escaped the Boston Marathon bombings in 2012 and was in France during November's Paris attacks.

Two other Mormon missionaries were also injured in the attacks.

The State Department has said about a dozen US citizens were injured in total.

Mr Kerry defended Belgium's counter-terrorism tactics, which have been scorned by critics as un-coordinated.

"People are jumping to conclusions," he said. "I think they are looking for things that sometimes are very difficult to analyse in the immediate aftermath of something".

He called criticism of Belgium's tactics "frantic" and "inappropriate".

All governments must improve on their efforts to stop terrorism, he said, and Brussels has made strides in the past year.

"We will not be deterred," Mr Kerry said, and said the fight against IS will be relentless. "We will come back with greater resolve - with greater strength - and we will not rest until we have eliminated your nihilistic beliefs and cowardice from the face of the Earth."

i think trump criticism of the stupid leaders running the US and other western countries is more valid and more important than criticism of muslim problems

if the first issue was resolved we wouldn't be having the second

but i do believe the short term solution of stopping immigration from certain countries is necessary until we start fixing our bullshyt leadership
