While I'm not crazy about having a 'leader'
Here is what I think we would need:
This man/woman needs to be relatively young, in his late 30's-40's he has to have come up as an activist during the crack era. Essentially a son/daughter of the civil rights movement not someone who marched or is less than 10 years removed.
Has to help bridge the schism between black men and women in America.
Should be open to working with other groups (Latinos, LGBT, Asians etc.) but not at the expense of problems specifically plaguing us.
Must be self educated. One who can teach through experience as well as have the book knowledge to back up his/her statements. Must have pursued some sort of post secondary education, yet not professorial or seen as an academic. I would prefer a late in life PHD or something to that effect. Must have published works.
Must have worked his/her way up to success, not come from the black elites.
Must indentify with the youth of today and willing to talk to them on a level playing field not talking down to them saying they should do this and that and speak on 'back in the days', must have an eye toward the future.
Must not use a religion as a platform, despite his/her personal beliefs. Must work with both churches and mosques to help foster community involvement as well as secular sources.
Must promote collective individualism, the ability to have different mindsets on various topics, yet knowing the importance of staying together on big picture issues (education, penal system, economic empowerment), and must create the platform.
Must be willing to work with the entertainment industry without being a player in it.Should work to affirm positive images of African-Americans in the media.
Stress the importance of maintaining the Black family. This goes to both sides of the gender. Men take responsibility for your children, but also for women to choose better partners at a younger age (high school, college) and for both to build an grow through each other, building success upon success.
Must work with government in a productive manner, can be critical of the it, but not in such a way that demeans or belittle the position and must provide cogent solutions and alternatives should he/she disagree while keeping the discourse high minded.
