I'm slowly getting equipment for a home gym. I have never done true weightlifting. I have a power cage that I have to put together and a weight bench. Now it's time to get plates and also bar bells. I see bumper plates are cheaper than cast iron plates. I've read cast iron is better for strength building, which is what I need.

Which should I get?

Good shyt, depends on your setup. My basement isn't finished so I used rubber plates so I don't destroy my shyt. I'd say if you can get horse stable mats or thick mats you can lay down on the floor, steel plates may be the way to go.

Haven't bought plates in a while but in my experience, iron plates have always been cheaper. I would be very cautious buying bumper plates that are cheaper than iron. The quality is probably trash. Either will be fine for someone at your level.

My setup is in my garage; the floor is cement. I guess I'll have to invest in a mat. Are they expensive?

3 foot by 4 foot is big enough for a 7 ft barbel with weight plates???
Possibly, I know a standard barbell is like 8-9 feet, so maybe 2 mats???

I know they do have those puzzle piece mats and a box comes with like 12 pieces, you could get a box of those and place them in the area where you're lifting and if you got enough, you can double stack.
