It literally gives your info to the Chinese government. This is one of the few times I dap the Trump State Dept. Too bad China has already received tens of millions of (young) Americans information already...

Tik Tok is an App. As simple as the US Government telling Apple and Google to get it off their app store and delete any existing app. Countries do this all of the time.

this country has the first amendment. software is speech. Is Code Free Speech?
The only way this could possibly work is through some sort of embargo.

And Tik Tok is having issues in Hong Kong as the Chinese government started cracking down on tech companies over there. They already abandoned their Hong Kong HQ.

So... I guess I’ll repeat my initial question... What digital products has the United States banned?

Does the First Amendment apply to Chinese companies or companies that break data piracy laws? :comeon:

first amendment doesn't apply to anyone, it restricts the government from infringing on peoples speech.

Data Protection 2020 | Laws and Regulations | USA | ICLG

There is no single principal data protection legislation in the United States. Rather, a jumble of hundreds of laws enacted on both the federal and state levels serve to protect the personal data of U.S. residents. At the federal level, the Federal Trade Commission Act (15 U.S. Code § 41 et seq.) broadly empowers the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to bring enforcement actions to protect consumers against unfair or deceptive practices and to enforce federal privacy and data protection regulations. The FTC has taken the position that “deceptive practices” include a company’s failure to comply with its published privacy promises and its failure to provide adequate security of personal information, in addition to its use of deceptive advertising or marketing methods.

As described more fully below, other federal statutes primarily address specific sectors, such as financial services or health care. In parallel to the federal regime, state-level statutes protect a wide range of privacy rights of individual residents. The protections afforded by state statutes often differ considerably from one state to another, and cover areas as diverse as protecting library records to keeping homeowners free from drone surveillance.

So unless the FTC find tiktok in violation of it's own privacy policy, i doubt they'll do anything since the data they collected was probably referred to in the user agreement. They're using API's a thousand other companies are using, the problem isn't just tiktok and it's all legal. :francis:

remember when facebook was paying teens $20/month to spy on them if they used facebook VPN app. they stopped when they got reported on but no punishment ever came from that.

Funny enough when I search for a list, all I get is stories related to Tik Tok. I know I've seen apps get pulled from Google Play and the App Store because of government pressure before. Wish I could offer a legit source for it.

ok...But I never argued about it applying to a company. I'm actually saying it doesn't apply here.
