CHICAGO (WLS) --
Chicago police are asking anyone who witnessed the deadly stabbing of a 25-year-old mother on the CTA Red Line to come forward.

The victim, identified as Jessica Hampton by the Cook County medical examiner's office, was stabbed in the neck on a Red Line train near the 47th Street station around 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

A photo posted on Facebook shows the suspect on the platform, being led away in handcuffs by police.

Hampton's family says Jessica was on her way from a North Side halfway house to her mother's South Side home at the time of her murder.

"My sister was a beautiful, gifted young lady. She did not deserve to go the way she did," says Lorel Hampton.

Witnesses said they had seen the man ride the train almost every day. They said he was sitting across from Hampton before the attack.

"He asked the young lady a question, she said no, and he got up and started stabbing her," said Andrea Patterson, a witness. "She fell toward the floor and he slit her neck."

Hampton was pronounced dead at the scene. She is survived by her six-year-old daughter, who is in foster care. No one else was hurt.

Investigators said the stabbing was a domestic dispute and that the suspect and the victim knew each other. But eyewitnesses said the attack appeared to be random.

Hampton's family said she and the suspect may have known each other, but they did not have a relationship.

Her uncle, Earnest Fraiser, said he believes the suspect made advances toward Hampton and when she refused, he got mad and killed her.

"Everybody was shocked that knows her," Fraiser said. "Who would do something like this to her and why?"

Passengers on the scene took pictures of Hampton's body and posted them on social media, and that is how some of her family members learned of her death.

"This family was watching that video yesterday, they were looking at the pictures on Facebook that people were spreading, not knowing until 9 o'clock last night it was their loved one they were looking at," says Dawn Valente, victim advocate.

The Hampton family is asking for the pictures and video to be taken down from social media. They are enraged that people would rather take pictures than offer to help on the scene.

Lorel Hampton says her sister was killed just as she was trying to turn her life around.

"My sister was working on getting [her daughter] back, trying to get herself together," she says.

CTA officials said homicides are rare on the transit system. There have only been three killings on the CTA since 2010. Overall crime was down 25 percent last year.

Investigators are examining surveillance video. The man in custody has not yet been charged.

Been hearing all types of scenarios on my feed. Apparently she was engaged, and the family did know the man who stabbed her, but don't believe they were involved. He was also allegedly asking about a baby before stabbing her, as she has a 6 year old who's in foster care.

shyt sounds much more deeper than we originally thought.

This is nuts you just never know who you sitting by or across from that could potentially be dangerous. I used to dread taking public transportation. I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often especially with the lack of security present.

this is why white people champion carrying guns with them 24/7, and i can't blame them for it.

if someone was a solid 30 ft with a desert eagle pointed at him bet nothing would have happened

Yeah, it's similar to the Kitty Genovese case, which I think branded the term 'Genovese effect', (and the terms bystander effect) which is basically assuming someone else is will come to the rescue.....Basically, residents of a NY building listened to a women get raped and murdered all night, everyone though the other would call the police, and no one did.

It's a tough call, I didn't even check the footage, but I do think it's shameful to be recording or pictures for purposes other then ID the suspect, that's disgusting and cowardly. But, what do you do? I've taken a lot of public transportation, all over, I've always felt safe in NY, but I can see where I wouldn't. And in San Diego, the trolley can be like the wild wild west, I've never had problems, but weekly/monthly there are beatings, stabbings, killings, and often won't make the news.

A few weeks back I was on the trolley and two bangers from SE looked like they were wetted out, were just yelling fukk DONALD TRUUUMP over and again, and leering at this old man, I personally thought it was ironic and funny, but it could have easily gotten out of hand, those dudes had carte blanche in there and they knew it.....They didn't even glance at me, but I often think in moments like that, what do I do if some girl gets beaten up, or someones purse gets snatched? Do i intervene, and thus expose myself to problems and LE possibly? Sit there like a coward, though a pragmatic one? I watched a girl get her iphone snatched on the trolley, and could not have helped, but I was so bothered by that shyt I got off with her, and other people, I wanted to give her 100$ or something, but in the end, I couldn't really help.

I can't see the video but in a lot of this type of situations, nobodies expecting the shyt so no one knows how to react. Most people freeze up or do what they used to doin in tense situations which nowadays is pull out their phones or run

I mean its fukked up but you cant expect the average person to do much of anything, must people don't even know how to defend themselves properly vs an unarmed individual, let alone somebody that has a knife and just tried to kill someone else

Be realistic when you see stories about shyt like this, stop overreacting and thinkin the average person is bruce wayne :francis:
