Then stop defending yourself. We need to stop acting as if we're sorry we are black. It's time to be black and proud. I feel an awakening in our community. The signs are there. This looks like the same article from Time. It was so poorly thought out and supported that its a shame it was even published. But I'm not surprised it was because it echoes the sentiment of a lot of privileged people, especially whites, who'd love to have everyone believe they have faced the same hardships as everyone else has in their history and still overcome, so anyone who can't has an 'effort' issue.

They'd love to have everyone ignore the fact that they have not just "succeeded" on their own against hardship, but "succeeded" almost entirely off of the back of actually subjugating and setting back entire groups of people. They'd love to have everyone believe that once that subjugation stopped (outwardly) that everything leveled out again and everyone was on the same plane, ignored centuries of subduing other groups.

At the end of the day, people with privilege have a vested interest in not acknowledging their privilege. If they acknowledge their privilege, that means that they would either have to say a) I don't care that its unfair, I'm okay with it continuing this way and basically say they're a bad person or b) go through a ton of cognitive dissonance to acknowledge its existence but still not want to work to have that privilege go away.
