As for Rep. Hunter, he told KUSI, “Whatever my time in custody will be, I will take that hit. My only hope is that the judge does not sentence my wife to jail. I think my kids need a mom in the home.”

He said he hoped to spare his children the spectacle of a trial.


“I think it would be really tough for them,” he told KUSI. “It’s hard enough being the kid of a public figure, and I think it’s time for them to live life outside the spotlight.”

The change of plea, if entered and accepted by the judge, also would close the complicated appeal that Hunter filed earlier this year. In an unusual move, the East County congressman appealed his prosecution in July to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeal even before his trial opened. He was arguing that his campaign spending is protected as legislative activity not subject to prosecution by the executive branch.
