All I can say is that I'm in a high margin niche professional services business that involves high net worth clients, investments and legal/consulting services. I'd be an idiot for telling you what it is because it's easy money. Then again, all my clients are abroad and not in the US, so it wouldn't apply to you.
Only advice I can give you:
- Be prepared to hustle and put in the work. If you can't imagine putting in 12-15 hours a day, setting up a business and building it, then it's not for you.
- Be prepared to take risks. You will lose time and money. If you're one of those risk averse types, then it's not for you.
- Be positive. Cautiously optimistic. Aggressive. If you're a debbie downer, always looking at the worst that could happen, then it's not for you.
- Take basic classes in accounting, finance, economics and marketing
- Learn to sell. Take some shytty sales job, if only to get over the fear of rejection and figure out what kind of sales pitches and approaches work for you. Do one that's B2C and one that's B2B, so you get experience in both sides. No matter what your business, it will involve a lot of selling, whether to consumers or to other businesses.
- Start building your credit. If you want to open a business, you need good credit to get a decent loan.
- Find out what other people are doing around you. Walk around your neighborhood, go to your local mall, check out the kiosks. See what's working and selling and what's not.
- Your county or state must have some small business resource center or whatever. Go there, learn to write a business plan. Talk to someone, see what you can get a grant for these days.
I know someone who got a $800,000 grant to set up a CNG refueling center, put in a million of his own and is now basically printing money.
- Go to other neighborhoods and compare them to yours. What's missing in yours that could do well? What are problems specific to your area that could be solved by a business or product? My cousin was driving around these Mexican neighborhoods and noticed there were no or few insurance brokers and a lot of them don't feel comfortable with the online thing. So he and his friends started setting up consolidated insurance brokers offices targeted to Hispanics. They have 18 locations now and now they've put in professional management, so they can transition out of their roles and start looking for their next thing.
- Think about what you like to do, what you're passionate about. A lot of business owners who are successful are because they are passionate about the business that they're in.
- Start something small. Fail. Learn what you did wrong. Try again.
- Find a mentor.
Putting in work isn't the issue. I helped a buddy of mine start his business and for about a two months I was getting 2 hours of sleep and some none at all. Thanks for the advice, man.
I cater and I want that to grow into something even bigger. I started it about a year and a half ago. I was sitting at my desk hating my job. I always thought about it but never took it seriously. But the company I was at I hated it so much I was like wth. So I researched on what I needed to be legit and just started doing it. Maybe some people just didn't want to put themselves out there because this is the Coli and all the fukkery/judgment that goes on. Like the slight shade you threw. I mean I wasn't going to even reply to him fearing putting myself out there. I wanted to be helpful tho.
What's wrong with u man? This is a public website, many people don't want to discuss their personal/professional life on a website where they hardly know anyone and only have a vague insight into their political opinions and taste in music. I definitely would never want to disclose any information that could directly relate back to who I am outside this board since I have no clue who any of you are.
Stop it man, if you dont wanna give your actualu business name out, dont. You can at least say what your business is and what field you are and maybe some background shyt. How you got started, what made you wanna do it, something. Dudes asking yall what yall did. Yall dudes wanna come be on this site and talking that big shyt, but none of yall ever wanna even describe what you do in any way shape or form. Im guessing cuz alot of you who own your own "business" really just run small websites or try and sell shyt out your car on some MLM scam type shyt. Yall probably them dudes trying to sell vitamins and shyt to all your people.
