Classic usually indicates that there is a consensus among fans about the quality of the music. If multiple rap fans tell you the songs are forgettable they are probably not "Classic"

Nobody said they hadn't heard the songs, they said the songs are not classic

and do you think that consensus was built organically?

commercial radio and major record labels owned by multi-national corporartions played a big part in what we found classic in the 90s

lol @ nikkas saying generally speaking big has classics but completely disregarding how that came to be

When he was alive he was just like Ross, one of the hottest MCs out making dope music. He became immortalized after his death by none other than Puffy.

yup!

He was immortalized after his death.

People underestimate the role of the Wallace estate and Puffy and his Bad Boy imprint in Big's legacy and legendary status. They did a lot of politicking and pushed a lot of propaganda (movies, documentaries, increasing sentimenatalism, magazine covers, editorial write-ups, tributes, etc.)

It's the same thing with 2pac

^but lets not act as if rick ross is anywhere near the level of popularity that big had before he died.

in all fairness, there was a ridiculous push to make biggie the man when he was alive as well. nobody wants to talk about that. but hey, theyve been pushing hard to make ross into a huge mainstream star, despite the fact that jeezy was and still is a much easier sell for def jam.

now that all the cards on on the table. biggie is a top 10-15 rapper in my book. meanwhile, ross has yet to crack my top 50. but im sure he'll leapfrog alot of people on my list by the end of the year.

The only thing BIG's death did was raise the profile of his second, inferior album, and push him prematurely into GOAT talks. But to act like he was just another random rapper, or a "Ross" back then, is insane. Ross is like the 4th or 5th hottest dude from his region....BIG was NY when he dropped, and instantly on a national level after "RTD".
