fukk it...chasing commercial hits is what lead to so much trash output in the first place. Genre needs to go back underground.
These new rappers aren't chasing hits, they are clout chasing. They barely stick to any type of song structure, and when they can't finish the song, they just slap 2 songs together and call it a beat switch. I don't wanna hear rappers like Jadakiss tryna make a hit, but rap songs crossing over was the reason why rappers got big budgets. The lack of money spent on artist development and production is a big part of the reason new rap sucks.

NLU had more organic legs to it

In Da Club was just the peak saturation level the industry could muster

In Da Club had 5th grade kids sneaking onto class computers to watch the video on MSN.com

Kids know about it to that extent before they’re leaving their house because of the long arm of the mainstream industry promotional vehicle

But I walked by dive bars in LA K-Town that threw on NLU, after promo cycle, and the energy shift inside was palpable enough to feel it while walking by on the sidewalk…. And I’m not even into the song like that

The reason Kendrick doesn’t fit this bill is because his songs are displays of Kendrick’s unique sonic signature (vocally) and more reflective of his brand of songs rather than an example of high achievement contemporary excellence

No :mjlol:

People actually liked In Da Club as a pure song. It just got super played out but it was huge just by listening.

The charts is fugazi. nba youngboy selling out arenas while not being a top 20 hit maker proves that.

That just shows his (predominantly young and black) fanbase doesn't pay for streaming services. His youtube numbers are very high but they don't count towards charts as much as paid streaming.

In terms of hits....Drake had a hit (Nokia) this year, Kendrick has had the biggest rap song this year (Luther) and last year (Not Like Us). There have been hits. The issue is Drake and Kendrick are in their mid 30s. I'd argue rap has gone through a lot of misfortune that has led to a generation missing. X/Juice/Pop dying killed off the next big three. Uzi/Kodak/Carti becoming drug addicts has removed potential hit makers from the market. Then the Thugger fukkery has indirectly led to Baby falling off and Gunna not being as big as he should be. In the void we got a lot of thot rap but that shyt was never going to last.
