I've heard it called men / "hand"In Haitian culture it is refer to as Sol or Susu.

If you're AA, your people had a variation of this.
During the Great Migration , in the destination cities they would create Mutual Aid groups / Social Clubs based on either the state, county, or city they were from. Sometimes the church their families attended back home.
Helped them to adjust and transition in the big city with people that they had kin or close ties to.
I believe I read about a similar practice being used. Going to check what I read.
