Can somebody explain in this thread what exactly is the ps5 hardware advantage?

There is no software outside of quantum error which is named appropriately. Sony fans love the library and so for those games Sony has a bunch of remasters to sell you until another sequel is completed. On the hardware front it's now clear the xbox is the hands down winner. And yet the narrative by Sony hopefuls is the faster SSD will somehow make the ps5 more powerful

When asked how they go into how open world games can load faster which is cool but since we dealing with SSD's here that was gonna be the case anyway and on top of that i know games like the witcher 3 didn't suffer from long loading screens so i need a better reason to get excited about the ps5's potential. I don't play fallout, I'm not really into open world games too much. Tekken 7 could really use an SSD. Someone posted a video showcasing how on ps5 you could be in space then instantly on earth without having to load each area. That's cool and all but is that supposed to be it?

I haven't done a full dive, but at face it seems to try and cut down on time related to I/O at more of a HW level than just relying on newer interfaces to do the work. I haven't seen the presentation in full. The important bits are things like the DMA Controller to get around potential CPU not keeping up with the transfer, or the prioritization scheme. It isn't in the DMA by itself, but if the design is actually non-marketing fluff then there is some big savings in application of the custom controller.

However, I don't see this mattering because the fastest M2 drives don't really blow out normal SSDs aside from benchmarking. Real world use its just a few seconds at most for something like PC games. The only draw for me is potentially cutting out CPU time and other latencies with custom design.

Now why this matters to the average mattress buyer is that there is potential savings for performance overall - namely through speed of operation and reduced overall cost in the CPU. Because it isn't out yet, it is just a dream in my eyes. You'll either feel it like the GDDR3 vs GDDR5 setups and low level APIs (ex. DX12, Vulkan), or it'll fall flat like the ESRAM/Cloud/Tiled Rendering/CPU Boost fairy dust that never came to be.

It's really not that serious and is a fairly standard question. Console gamers drive gaming, what makes one console better than the other is determined by this exact topic. Right now on paper the xbox is the place to be. But not everyone is convinced. What's odd is even mark cerny couldn't explain it and every expert in the field is unsure. It appears the playstation will be on average a 9tb system but it's not about tb anymore according to Sony. Rumors have suggested the ps5 is more powerful than the xbox but you won't see that said ANYWHERE other than on a forum. It's sad that we have forums to discuss topics and acquire information, and then you get attacked for asking. These types of replies come from when you're in a lesser position. If a Sony fan asked this same question about xbox I'd do my best to provide an accurate answer. Nothing to hide nah mean. Here's 7 reasons why...

Bruh the goalpost has been adjusted. I clearly started the hardware advantage. Just saying games is disingenuous because you only know of godfall which nobody here mentions as this must have. So any fanboy will say and think things will continue. As a student of this field i know it never goes down like that. Socom was great during 1 of Sony's 4 gens, God of war wasn't that popular during the ps3 era compared to ps2 and 4. Uncharted had 3 games one gen, only one last gen. What to expect next gen? Even less. shyt cost. Xbox has put the money up, plans on competing. Nobody can speak on games other than multiplats running better on one system over the other.

But, Sony gamers are singing a new tune and you repeated it. So explain it to me because i seriously don't understand why you said SSD like if the xbox doesn't have a bigger nvme SSD in its system what does the slightly faster SSD equate to? I wouldn't say it can do anything, friends of Sony are saying the SSD. What advantages does the SSD provide in real world terms. Better graphics? Or is it purely faster loading and they saying because of that new types of games "could" be created. So the advantage is that developers "could" make use of it? The cloud "can" do the same shyt and we got details and receipts. I just want a single receipt on what the ps5 SSD advantage is. I'd appreciate it

Not exactly. In probable terms it's definitely possible, but I don't think it'll be anything too major. The point of contention is whether these customized bits go above and beyond the function of just being a part of the motherboard design. Sometihng I thought about is they don't have to adhere to standards like conventional PC parts. Riskier, unconventional design in the PC space can flop just off of low sales, build quantities and price, but for Sony can pay off because they'll be selling X millions of console units guaranteed. Another good contention area is that it can help speed up everything else outside of games. I know the UI on the XBO is still clunky in some areas, and I bet loading assets from the web and caching to the drive plays a part in it. Unfortunately, SSDs in current consoles don't blow the HDD out like it would on PC, as the consoles aren't designed for it... which is where a more lower level, ground up approach comes in for the next generation.


As it currently stands I think it does nothing major, but I'm open to seeing if it does do anything positive. I know it is a troll thread but I always look forwards to seeing what consoles bring in tech wise.
