Can someone break down the history of REDMAN's gangster and why so many rappers were shook of him?

man who you telling, i got stories for days, when i used to be chilling up in Hill Manor projects, and lil bricks. all of this we pre blood and pre crip era.
I went to school 3 blocks down from Hill Manor, St. Benedict's from 7th to 12th grade. Plus my wife grew up in Hayes Homes, so I definitely know that entire area front and back. From when I was born up until I was 13, I lived in the Weequahic section over on Schley st. But from 13 up until about 22/23 I lived on South 7 st and 12 ave. From 13 to about 21, my life was crazy. From fist fights, shootouts, being hogged tied and taped as a young lad, to kidnapping and holding one of my foes captive, drug game, it was insanse. In through the mist of all of that, I still managed to get through high school, college, and obtain my bachelors degrees. 90 percent of my peoples didn't make it from that era. A lot of them are dead, in the feds. And you have some who did the dishonorable thing and took the snitch route smh. I'm just thankful Allah kept me here and gave me enough wisdom to get out of that life when I still was able too.

he did a lot of drugs and seemed legit crazy back in the early to mid 90's. he didn't become comical until him and meth started to catch on as a pot smoking buddy duo.

I said "deep in the streets". I'm talking about people who make a commitment to criminal activity as their way of making a living. He was a DJ, he went to college for a bit he wasn't a big time drug dealer, gangster or stick up kid. No doubt he's been involved with shyt and seen shyt because he's from Newark & he rolls with those types but I've never heard of him being any type of hood boss.

Red is just a normal hood cat that never rolled wit bodyguards and wasn't afraid to knuckle up wit anybody... Reason why he is respected because he's one of them rappers that's always in the hood. I wouldn't be surprised if hes still living in that crib wit the broke doorbell lol

Faith Evans dated him in highschool and wrote in her book about how shy and quite he was back then

As far as the crazy image he had in the early 90's it was from the shrooms, dust, E and everything else he was experimenting with back then... But really it was part of his image...He wasn't Dmx, Bizzy Bone type crazy... It was more of an act wit Red to match the type of music he was making

I am also interested in this. I always thought he was just a goofball

Him and Meth are on the goofy side now but both Meth and Red both came in the game on some 'scary grimey looking nikka sh*t.' Till this day I feel when red and Meth finally got together..Reds goofyness rubbed on Meth way more.

This.

The Twinz was KNOWN to be some wild shorties, and they been his mens for years. PPP and all them Newark cats Red been rollin’ with – Gov Mattic, Diesel Don, etc. – them some real street dudes. Plus, Red got ties to the street related to his weed connects.

But like @FreshAIG said, Newark dudes – and alotta North Jersey cats in general - is just grimy like that to begin with, lol…

But yeah, there’s only two times I’ve ever heard anything about Redman and conflict:

1) When his truck got shot at riding through Brooklyn WAYY back in the day, in fact, I think it may have even been stolen (he raps about this in the song “Noorotic“ off of Dare Iz A Darkside, and also on another song on Muddy Waters, but I can’t remember it right now…but the line on “Noorotic” goes “…so what the fukk, I got clapped on for my truck/then I laughed, cause fukk the cash I just wanted my tape back…”

2) When (and this has never been OFFICIALLY confirmed, but it WAS reported in the “rumors” section of The Source once way back in the day), during the Canibus/LL beef, Canibus got onstage at the House of Blues in L.A. and started goin’ in on LL…and Red was in the house, supposedly dusted, and grabbed the mic and told Canibus to fall back cause LL was his mans, then proceeded to kick a freestyle that had a diss to Canibus in it, and in response Canibus LEFT the building.

Prolific posting. I never knew the story behind that line in Noorotic. Dope info

And yes I definitely remember reading about that Canibus incident.

Smh lay off the rap music b.

I had friends who were dropping out of school as early as 7/8th grade to sell crack. There's a big difference between them and the kids that went to school and hustled weed on the side to make some extra bread.

When I say deep in the streets I'm talking about dudes like Fat Joe, Maino, 50 Cent, Cormega etc. dudes that were out on the streets making or taking it on a regular basis and have people behind the wall that can verify that.

Meth would have NO LANE to even come in the game without Red. Redman's grimy dusthead vibe helped kick in the door for Wu but of all of them Method Man was the most influenced by Red's style and presentation. But Meth has never made "goofy" music so from an artistic perspective I don't see what you're saying. Meth is a dope rapper but never had the depth that Redman had. Plus Meth is too guarded to put himself out there.

Yeah I was just about to say every story I've ever heard about the Geto Boyz made me convinced that those nikkas were crazy as cat shyt... no acting at all... some nikkas don't give a fukk... Willie D & Bushwick REALLY don't give a fukk...
 The story brother MC Search just told on the Champs Podcast about Bushwick Bill

15 children, coke up the wazoo, also beat his brother to death, brother almost killed him, momma came with the mac 11, cop come, she leaves, they arrest Bill's brother, Bill spits in the police car (at brother)...barely

How you gonna ROFL with a hollow back?
Not much of a feat, but I also read that during the Mobb beef, Red just open hand slapped Prodigy right in the mug at one of the source awards. I know all the history between the lil' Jamal/Murray and Mobb beef, the Parrish and hit/def squad beef, but ever since I read that shyt years ago I never heard anybody speak directly about that incident.

Well hey the Geto Boys were a little more out there than I thought but still you gotta understand the horrorcore joints specifically were just too ridiculous for me to take them seriously. I preferred joints like "City Under Siege", "Read These Nikes", "Mind Playin' Tricks", "F^ck A War" & "Let a Ho be a Ho".
Anyway I feel like we need a separate thread for all the Geto Boys related drama.
