I've always had a head full of hair with the exception of what I cut it really low a couple of years ago (fade low) just to see what that was like. It grew back fast. I don't really do anything to it except wash it (Suave or H&S for no dandruff), I don't even use the regular natural products.

A lot of women put glues, sew-ins (sometimes too tightly braided underneath), and harsh chemicals in their hair for years on years on years..that's a lot of punishment. I wouldn't expect it to be healthy. The women who don't do that (except where genetics come into play with medical scalp issues ) tend to have healthy heads of hair, thickness varying by genes.

You can perm your hair and still grow it long if you take care of it. I think the problem with the girls with short damaged hair is miseducation. When they perm it, they try to get it bone straight. The longer you keep the relaxer on, the more damage, the straighter and thinner and more brittle hair gets. On top of that people tend to overlap their perm. So they end up re-perming/re-damaging their already damaged hair. You should use a perm to loosen your curls then flat iron or wrap for less damage.

Also, a lot of people are scared to get there hair wet. Moisture allows your hair to bend not break. A lot if cheap hair products are petroleum filled and petroleum is a sealant. The problem is that they are sealing the hair without adding the moisture, so moisture can't in and the little bit of moisture that was in the hair isn't replenished.

Frequent styling is often used to compensate for short, uneven, damaged hair. Flat irons, combing, dyeing, and lots of manipulation to dry, damaged hair cause breakage.
