Yao and Dwight both improved their play under his watch. Both have advocated for him too.

Edit: Also Lue, Kidd, Watson, and Fisher barely had any experience and still got shots.

Maybe he's not qualified. Has he even been a high ranking assistant or associate head coach?
At this point I low key think teams he assisted on were probably doing him a solid.

id imagine if he actually added anything of note during scouting/strategy meetings for upcoming matchups hed get a shot. probably doesnt provide jack shyt in that regard, which is what a head coach would be looked at to provide, at least on occasion. so they keep him in the hands on type shyt for post players
