Humanity has never seen poetry on the level of what Hip Hop has done. Kool G Rap, Canibus, Rakim, Eminem, Lupe Fiasco, Big Pun. GZA, Nas, Twista, Kendrick Lamar a good portion of battle rappers and others I havent mentioned have taken poetry on levels of superiority that no other genre has ever been able to take it

.

Facts. These rappers are low key modern day prophets spitting powerful vibrations that resonate on wax and y'all don't even know it. Hip Hop is hands down the most powerful music ever created. In my eyes it's even lowkey disrespectful to imply instrumentation is a more powerful vibration than spoken word.

Two totally different skill sets.

First off there are far less master lyricist than they are great jazz musicians..

to be a master of the English dictionary is no small feat... writing 3 16 bar verses and not have a bar slack is no easy feat.. cadence, metaphors, entendres, flow, breathe control, stories, delivery its so much that goes into being a rapper. Don't let the mainstream fool you.. its a reason certain rappers are respected by their peers i.e. Lupe, black thought, Nas

When I picked up the guitar I was told jazz is the hardest type of music to play/master that's a fact!!! To perfect tones is difficult in itself.

Both are great!!! Stop trying to shyt on rap

I'm sorry but when I hear something like this

can't no fukking purely instrumental jazz song have a nikka up 5:00 am in the morning ready to make the world his bytch the way some shyt like that can :wow:. Hip hop damn near a religion to me, I wish you CACS would stop tryna take away from what nikkas have created by pitting shyt against each other.

Its funny people spitting real facts like this but they right. I was just telling a friend not only are the beats sometimes more complex but then you have someone spitting poetry on top of it, and all this has to be in rythmn. Now granted most instrumentals come from someone using a computer and not real instruments but is it about the sound or how one gets the sounds?

I feel like when we do this comparison its just trying to disregard hip hop as a genre. I mean most of these kids rapping now a days ain't shyt.
But rap legends like ice cube, nas, jay, biggie or even people from today like kendrick may not be talented in the aspect of actually performing instruments they have way with words that takes actual talent.

this....the focal point of rap is the lyrics and in that realm, hiphop has no equal when you compare it to the lyricism of any other musical genre and it's not even close. The mistake is to compare it something like jazz/funk/soul etc on a pure musical/technical fluency in instruments, level for obvious reasons.

Mainstream hip-hop has totally fukked up the general perception of hiphop in general.

This dumbed down unintelligent garbage on the radio that's been made the "face" of hiphop totally undermines the intelligence required to paint a picture with words.

Most people generally speaking would :childplease:at anybody using "hip-hop" and "intelligence" in the same sentence. Mainly because of the content. Most casuals correlate hip-hop with ignorance and anti-intelligence. Again, this is because of what's pushed mainly in the mainstream.

Rappers are some of the most brilliant minded orators and charismatic public speakers in our society:

^^^^ What these guys did here to captivate the audience takes supreme talent, intelligence and charisma. A special type of mind to come up with the words in the first place and to consistently memorize these poems in full. Not easy to do.

And I'm not even gonna get into the physical aspects of rapping (breath control, clarity of speech, etc)

Everywhere...You never there.
Relatively speaking yes... but rap was an outgrowth of the have nots trying to maximize and capitalize on what ever they could as poor folks. Making something out of nothing usually doesn't involve traditional instruments, formal music lessons and vocal coaching. :manny:

I think it takes less musical talent. But with actual lyricism and meaning. 16s can be up there with Shakespeare’s sonnets. It’s just rappers are too trendy and reference too much popular culture to really last like other forms of music. Ain’t nobody wanna hear about popping pills and getting lit 10 years from now. I can say that because nobody wanna hear bout getting crunk today when that shyt dominated the fukk outta 10 years ago

You said "hip-hop artists", which would include DJs. The skill and mastery it takes to perfect beat juggling, mixing, scratching, needle dropping, etc, often in poorly lit and smoky venues is something definitely on par with playing an instrument, because it is.

You can't really compare Mc's to instrumentalists because they're vocalists. And as far as lyrics go, this isn't even a contest. No musical genre in history matches the complexity of hip-hop in that vein, regardless of subject matter.
