Can we discuss when r&b acts used to change up their sound after a flop or long hiatus?

This is inspired by the trread saying trey song is generic.
Remember when R&B artist used to take a two to three year hiatus
and completely change up their sound when the next album dropped.

Even though "Mary" went 2xPlat "Not Gon Cry" was her last top 5
Billboard 100 until Dr. Dre laced the beat for her lead single.:ohlawd:

This album is arguably brandy best work. Moesha had wrapped during the
recording and Brandy and her producer Darkchild were experimenting with
new sounds.

Ashanti didnt change the game or nothing with this album but this
single hard :whoo:

Tyrese took a 4 year break hiatus filmed 2fast2furious,Waist
Deep, became friends with Game and turned into a rapper. :pachaha:
The first half of alter ego is a good cd though.
