I actually am incredibly critical of "New Age" yoga, not just because of the cultural appropriation, but do to it acting as a front for sexual abuse of people who are brought into the cult-like atmosphere.

I agree 100%, I think all the time they spend researching things like this, or memorizing facts could be put to better use, like learning a trade or going to school. There was a thread on tumblr with sistas going in on this artist who drew some really dope pictures of Black men & women as royalty
and of them embracing/supporting each other because all of the women's bodies, in their opinion, were unrealistic (Big chest, small waist, wide hips etc).

All his drawings were ankh caricatures of Black women
Giant Afros, huge breasts, incredibly small wastes, huge hips, and incredibly long legs. He didn't draw any other form for women until he was criticized on every platform.

You are right about this. The guys yelling at the people on the street are not the representatives I want, or who are needed. They could spend hat effort building and researching. Each of them could be an African Studies PhD with the amount of time they spend on the subject, but instead hey stay at home smoking weed, "opening their third eye" or yelling at people on the street.
I know a lot of people who spend the time they spend, but put it into constructive subject matter and real discourse, they're at Columbia/Barnard, Morehouse, Spelman, Howard, Yale, writing dissertations on the subject, opening up entirely new fields, and changing the way it's seen as a subject and its effect on life.

They won't know any.
Ask them about what's going on in Central Africa, the partition of Sudan and South Sudan, ask them about the Maghreb, ask them about the rise of Al-Queda in North Africa, ask them abouy Zimbabwe and colonialism/neocolonialism, ask them about South Africa and the fight for human rights, ask them about subjugation and Rwanda, ask them about ANY of those things.
None will know anything about it.
