Let’s have a look at his career as a PF up until first round of the 2006 playoffs against the Kings when Pop moved him over to C to replace Nazr Mohammed/Nesterovic and Horry moved to the starting lineup.
9 years at PF (98-06), he accomplished the below
Regular Season Averages
22 PTS
12 REBS
2.5 BLKS
Postseason
3x Champion as #1 Option
3x FMVP (Arguable that Ginobili deserved 05, but even with 2 FMVPs, he’s got more than next three PFs behind him)
6 50-Win teams
3 60-Win teams
3 Finals Appearances
4 Conference Finals
0 Missed Playoffs
Awards
2x MVP (9x Top 10 in MVP Votes)
ROY
ASMVP
8x All-Star (Would’ve been 9 if not for the 99 season)
8x 1st NBA All-Team
1x 2nd NBA All-Team
6x 1st NBA All-Defense
3x 2nd NBA All-Defense
If Tim Duncan’s career ended with injury the 1st game of 2007 and never played another game, this 9-year stretch at PF would still be the greatest of all time. Most great centers pre-80s never played more than 13 seasons (except Cap) and we’re still mentioning them the greatest at that position.
Tim can’t control the position Pop put him at and once the admiral retired, Nazr could only be effective at that position for so long before Duncan made more sense at the 5.
It’s not a fact he played 2/3 of his career at Center. He played C for 11 full seasons out of his 20 year career. Name another PF that has had a better 9-year run.
Until then, accept that Tim Duncan is the greatest PF of all time.
