Is that a problem ? There are even syrians, ordinary citizens, backing Assad.

Yes it's a problem. He's a ruthless bloodthirsty dictator. The fact that terrorists are running amuck (with his blessing) doesn't change that fact. That was his game plan all along. Just like the rebels he has blood on his hands.

I certainly would not sanitise his actions. Saying his term ends in 2021 is to pretend that he's a legit democratic leader when he's not.

@FAH1223 sounding like an Assad apologist :patrice:

I'm not an apologist

There's no good guys in Syria

But the opposition is fragmented and there's too many Al Shabaab type b*stards amongst them. Additionally their propaganda methods have been shameful. Rebels shooting at civilians going to govt controlled Aleppo is some BS

But the rebels played the game correctly in the beginning:manny:

Back in 2012, you could make yourself an Islamist group and get hundreds of thousands or millions in gulf money :wow:

But the way forward for Syria is the state to remain in tact. You can't collapse it and have another Somalia. Assad is an evil b*stard but it's not like his opponents are any better.

I'd rather his backers who have leverage over him push him to reforms and political transitions.

Yes, Assad made this a sectarian war. Yes, he let psycho Jihadis have free reign.

At the same time the CIA played a yuge role from 2010 onward

And it almost got to him till Moscow intervened

The idiot should have done real reforms in 2011 :snoop:

Dictators like Assad and Sadaam are awful but these are the type of guys needed to keep the region in check...There are far worse actors in the middle east than Assad...

Iraq and Libya didn't get better when the west took out Sadaam and Gaddafi...These people are far far far worse today than they were in the 90s with no end in sight for their misery...Their countries have turned into cesspools of jihadi fueled anarchy...

That's exactly what Syria would of turned into had the "moderate rebels" :stopitslime: been successful in overthrowing Assad...

No evidence is ever good enough for you. Your MO is to peep what the US or other governments do and just ride with their opponents lol. I mean I don't fukk with the US govt either but I don't deny blatant shyt.

:usure: So the cop out of not providing evidence is clear. You claim alot of shyt but somehow you think I won't agree to it. :hubie:

I know some of democracies most loyal worshipers wont like this but sometimes dictatorship like ruling is necessary.

Sure.... Old tactics reused....

March 1949 Syrian coup d'état - Wikipedia

Macmillan backed Syria assassination plot

The plan called for funding of a “Free Syria Committee” [hmmm … sounds vaguely familiar], and the arming of “political factions with paramilitary or other actionist capabilities” within Syria. The CIA and MI6 would instigate internal uprisings, for instance by the Druze [a Shia Muslim sect] in the south, help to free political prisoners held in the Mezze prison, and stir up the Muslim Brotherhood in Damascus.

The "preferred plan"adds: "Once a political decision is reached to proceed with internal disturbances in Syria, CIA is prepared, and SIS [MI6] will attempt, to mount minor sabotage and coup de main incidents within Syria, working through contacts with individuals.

The planners envisaged replacing the Ba'ath/Communist regime with one that was firmly anti-Soviet, but they conceded that this would not be popular and "would probably need to rely first upon repressive measures and arbitrary exercise of power".

The Redirection

To undermine Iran, which is predominantly Shiite, the Bush Administration has decided, in effect, to reconfigure its priorities in the Middle East. In Lebanon, the Administration has coöperated with Saudi Arabia’s government, which is Sunni, in clandestine operations that are intended to weaken Hezbollah, the Shiite organization that is backed by Iran. The U.S. has also taken part in clandestine operations aimed at Iran and its ally Syria. A by-product of these activities has been the bolstering of Sunni extremist groups that espouse a militant vision of Islam and are hostile to America and sympathetic to Al Qaeda.

Nobody is saying Assad is a saint. But in this situation, he's the best solution for Syria.

I don't think Assad is particularly blood thirsty. He did what every other leaders in the region (and in the world) would've done in the same situation.

Assad is pretty decent when you compare him to his father or this his late brother, who should've been president.
