Can you be a rap fan if you don't enjoy 90s hip-hop?

Breh, the biggest rappers in the world have had to be melodic. Jay, 50, Kanye, Drake, etc.
Snoop wasn't melodic? 2pac? Pimp c? Outkast? Goodie mob? The list goes on and on and on.

You think rappers in the 2000s invented it or something?

90s rap isn't confined to new York boom bap you know that right?

Breh, I know this is a weird question, but do you listen to music with headphones or speakers? Maybe my headphones aren't that great, because I can't take in rapping for too long or my ears hurt/I get burnt out.
Sounds like the genre just isn't for you.

both but you didn't answer the question :stopitslime:
Being melodic just means being aesthetically appealing. A dope hook works.

I like 90s hip-hop, but I just get burnt out listening to just bars. I'ma need to find better headphones. Maybe that'll solve this problem.

What "melodic" means exactly to you?
Jay is not singing for example, he's rapping you still call him melodic
besides that there's 2Pac, Snoop, Dre or Emiem, all of them were huge and none of them sang like Drake or Ye
They didn't "sing" but they've had melodic songs

We've reached a generational shift/cutoff with how quick things move in music.

Some of us were born in the 70's, 80's and music wasn't moving SO fast and disposably so it wasn't odd to listen stuff that came out the decade you were born in or the gen before.

I grew up on 90's West coast hip hop. BUT I was always up for hearing any and all 80's hip hop too because I didn't have access to SO MUCH shyt at one time like they do now.

It sucks because there's some real gems in it that can be remade/modernized for the social media age but I can't fault the young dudes for not wanting to fukk with 90's music when they've been for the most conditioned to have VERY short attention spans

Cats can barely stand shyt that came out last summer these days.

I think this is a very good and interesting question.

I think you can be a real Hip-Hop head to if you listen to Trap like you can be when you listen to Boom-Bap.
I would just consider it Old Skool -vs- New Skool.
Cause a lot of so called real Hip-Hop isn't really real lyrically neither. (fake gangsters talking about they murdering)
That should be called fake hiphop to
Of course there are real crooks though.

i'm not into stuff that's too grimey neither. I do listen to it sometimes but it doesn't stick with me for very long cause i simply can't relate to that.
I do understand a lot of rappers come from dangerous environments where it's normal to talk like that but it's exxagerated.
In Hip-Hop it seems cool. I mean in the 70's black music was all about love.

Me, I'm more of a fan of that Neo-Soul sound with rap for example and friends consider me a head. (probably cause i make beats)
As a teenager i liked gangsta-rap but when i got older i started liking more alternative rap like Jurassic 5, A Tribe Called Quest, Common, Brother Ali. Your taste changes when you get older.

How come? Most of the new generation of rap fans don't enjoy the 90s. They prefer the post-808s and Heartbreak rap.

There's nothing wrong with liking 808s. A lot of it is creative although i do find a lot of it sounding very similar.

People are just stuck in the past. Including me and i'm kinda ok with it.

Of course you can, technically speaking, but it's sad that people are that limited in their taste in music. I mean I see old heads saying that they only fukk with golden age hiphop, which was better but what was the difference. The problem is having a limited taste in a broad genre.

Like Drake did, I expect this new generation to start sampling hiphop songs from the 90s and shyt, introducing their listeners to that shyt. Just like I was introduced to what the previous generations or their parents listened to. It's a great way of introducing great music.
